EATING BREAKFAST

Topic: Eating a healthy breakfast; why it’s important for college students.

Organization: Problem/Solution

Specific Purpose: I want my audience to understand that there is time to eat breakfast in the morning and why, how and what breakfast can do to help your health.

INTRODUCTION

Attention getter: You wake up and oh man, what’s that feeling? It feels like your insides are caving in and wait, wait – you’re hungry. Starving actually. Oh no, you have three minutes to get to class so it’s either this: you check your myspace really quick or you grab an apple and an orange juice. Not many people grab that apple and eating breakfast can be one of the most important things you’ll do in the morning.

Relevance: As college students on the go every morning, we fail to realize that we’re not getting nutrition to fuel our bodies for the rest of the day. We blame it on not enough time or the latest diet trend – either way, a busy college student seems to hardly have time to eat breakfast.

Credibility: My mother is a nurse and a strong advocate on breakfast in the mornings so as a child; she instilled in me the knowledge that a healthy morning meal brings.

Propositional Statement: Not having healthy eating habits remains a problem not only to college students but children and adult everywhere. Since awareness of the benefits and necessities a breakfast can provide, I propose there should be more media marketing for real life students and a lesson in health class devoted to a good start.

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but 20 to 30% of students don’t eat breakfast due to early start. In fact, some students have the time to eat a poptart, or cereal, or instant oatmeal, but since it’s so early they don’t think they're hungry. Then, they go to school and 30 minutes after class started they wish that they could eat something, and then the students go about 4 hours until they get to eat lunch.…

About 60% of teenagers skip breakfast at least 3 times a week. And females skip over three times the rate of males. The most common reason for skipping breakfast is not having enough time. Yet 22% of teenage girls say they skip meals because they are "on a diet." It is a seemingly normal practice for women and girls who want to loose weight to skip breakfast and sometimes even lunch, believing the all too common myth "eating less leads to less fat." This is entirely untrue. In fact, eating less not only completely deprives your body of everything it needs to function, but leads to weight gain in the long run.…

Breakfast is the first meal of the day when one first wakes up; that is approximately 8 hours the body had no food intake – no carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals. For a human body to function properly it primarily needs glucose. When one skips breakfast the body runs low on glucose, causing the brain to not function at its full potential. This has many effects on the body including adverse effects on blood pressure, cholesterol and insulin, causing mental distress, lower cogitative performance affecting the memory, concentration and awareness. Mention can be made of the study conducted by Lopez (1993) which examined 279 pupils who come from very low socio-economic backgrounds and he grouped into categories of being normal, wasted or stunted. It was reveled that there were no consistent discovery of any relationship between children’s performance in school and the intake of breakfasts especially I n the area of short-term visual memory, problem solving and or attention tasks in any of the groups that had sufficient nutrition. Lopez concluded that children’s academic performance could be enhanced through short-term tasks, motivation and as well as the maintenance of conditions of routines. He reiterated that breakfasts do not have any effect on the cognitive development of children. The gap in the study conducted by Lopez lies in the fact that he did not have any control over what the children consumed the previous night before the experiments were conducted given the condition that the children stayed in their respective…

Are you like those who hop out of bed each morning ravenous and ready for breakfast? Or do you get through the morning with just a hot cup of coffee and absolutely no interest in that first meal of the day? Breakfast plays a very important role for our health, but a lot of people neglect breakfast. It always surprises me when I hear someone who skip breakfast in an effort to cut calories and lose weight, or because they’re convinced that they are not hungry and “couldn’t possibly eat anything in the morning.” The way I see it, breakfast is another opportunity in the day to eat delicious food and it’s also a meal where you can fill up on necessary nutrients. Eating breakfast is one of the best things that you can do to start your day out right and it is important to remember that healthy food should be selected for your morning meal.…

Maybe it’s one of those days where the meal consists of eggs, bacon and toast. Or maybe you’re running out late and you could only grab a half of a bagel with cream cheese. Or maybe you didn’t have time to eat anything at all. One thing is for sure – breakfast is the most ambivalent meal in college life. Some prefer to skip breakfast all together, while some just grab something small as they walk out the door – is there really anything wrong with that? We’re putting “the most important meal of the day” under the microscope, discovering what it means in the context of a busy college schedule (Palladino, 2012).…
