Echo
“Do I freaking have to?” “Yes.” “If you don’t do it, you can’t be in our group anymore.” “Yeah.” “Ugh. Fine. Whatever.”

It just wasn’t fair. Mrs. Kwa just announced our Greek Mythology project. We had to form a group, choose a myth, and perform it. Are you kidding me? She was making jokes with Geo about the myth of Echo & Narcissus, a pretty common myth about a nymph named Echo who loved to talk, and a very conceited guy named Narcissus. Echo annoyed Hera with her blabbermouth, so Hera eventually cursed Echo so that Echo couldn’t say anything, and all she can do is echo whoever’s speaking’s last words. She soon falls in love with Narcissus, but he rejected her in a very harsh way. Aphrodite did not approve of his actions and felt bad for poor Echo, and so she relieves Echo of her pain, and Aphrodite curses Narcissus to fall in love with his own reflection and die like way. Mrs. Kwa mentioned that he’d be just right for the role of Narcissus since he was also conceited. “Hey! Sonam should be Echo!” I was now paying attention to the conversation going on. “Yeah! Sonam, you should be Echo!” Nope. “Yeah… no thanks.” “DUDE! You’d be perfect for it since you talk and mock people so much! Um… No. “No way!” “Just go home and think about it.” Can I not? “Do I freaking have to?” “Yes.” No. “If you don’t do it, you can’t be in our group anymore because we’re doing Echo & Narcissus and you HAVE to be Echo..” You’re threatening me? Fine. “Yeah.” Ughh. “Ugh. Fine. Whatever.” I finally agreed reluctantly. I bet I’ll be hating the role & the project even more by the end of this.

The next day, our group gathered together and sat in a circle. We discussed our play, the roles, and our outfits. “So maybe Cathy can be Aphrodite then?” “Do I have to sing though?” “I’ll be the narrator!” “Brian, you can be Zeus.” Soon, an hour passed and we were finally clear on what to do and what’s going to happen. Suddenly, the

Every time he touched his reflection in the water, it disappeared, frustrating Narcissus. Because of this, he could not let go of his reflection and dared not to lose sight of it, resulting in him sacrificing any other connections he held in his life to focus on one connection instead, causing Narcissus to suffer, eventually leading to his tragic death. Such events are evident in the section, “Frightened to touch the water, Narcissus lay still by the pool gazing into the eyes of his vision. He (Narcissus) cried in frustration. As he did so, Echo also cried. He (Narcissus) did not move, he did not eat or drink, he only suffered. As he pined he became gaunt, losing his…

Narcissus was cruel not in the case of Echo alone. He shunned all the rest of the nymphs as he had done poor Echo. One day a maiden, who had in vain endeavored to attract him, uttered a prayer that he might some time or other feel what it was to love and meet no return of affection. The avenging goddess heard and granted the…

Our first meeting of our group was poorly attended. Alexi and myself were the only members to show up, however Nicole was chatting with us on Google Docs because she was too sick to attend our meeting. This is the meeting where we began writing our first script, which ended up needing to be completely rewritten. Niria took until March, 8th to give me her information to join our group’s GroupMe chat but really contributed to the success of the performance with her dedication to her part and adding in her on personal attitude to her character. Our poor communication in the beginning made the process much more stressful and difficult than it truly needed to be.…
