Eco 372 Week 1 Reflection Paper
1. The current “widely accepted standard” defines poverty as living on less than 2$ per day. Extremely poverty would be living on less than 1$ per day. The way this definition varies from issues of inequality and economic welling being is people who do not have the “basic necessities -- the food, the shelter, the clothing-- that they need to lead a reasonable life is seen as poverty. However Issues of inequality and distribution of other measures of well being says that there no way to “adequately capture” a person’s welling being, and that those who don’t fit the standards could still be living in poverty. So overall, this definition speaks on well being and survival, while the inequality focus about fairness and equal destructions and having a stable lifestyle.

For this week’s assignment, I am going to write about what sources of funding might be available for the start-up company called “Sun Dry Fruits”. The company will offer organic fruits, dried in the sun. The raw material will be acquired from the local farmers who are compromised on planting pesticide free fruits. The funding is for the equipment to dry the fruits, rent, promotion and utilities. From this week’s readings I have found several sources for small start-ups; however, the funding that will satisfy the needs of the company is the State and Federal loan.…

We explored three different options, given the need to create a division of work that would maximize the number of tables manufactured per day by either utilizing four or five employees and allowing the employees to either be part of the manufacturing process or manufacture tables on their own. We first decided to combine the finishing step with the packaging step since packaging required a very minimal amount of time and because the employee assigned to this function was being severely underutilized , therefore one employee could handle both job duties. We also decided that Cathy should be excluded from the manufacturing process and George should manufacture tables on his own, since he is the one that can assemble a table using the least amount of time. Using the Assignment method and the different times that it would take each individual to perform each job duty we concluded that it will take 260 minutes to manufacture one table given that assembly was assigned to Tom (60), finishing and packaging was assigned to Leon(90), and preparation was assigned to Randy(110). By utilizing this approach Tom, Leon, and Randy could manufacture 4.36 tables in 480 minutes( total time available divided by longest job time), given that they work an eight hour shift, meanwhile George could manufacture…

Team B discussed several primary and secondary observations of organizations using technological advances, staffing realignment, renegotiation, logistics and supplier management, and outsourcing, among other things, to reduce costs. All of these areas usually hold several cost-incurring skeletons, however when attempting to eliminate unnecessary cost without disenfranchising revenues generating stakeholders, companies have to get creative. Authors Anupam Agarwal, Eric Harmon, and Michael Viertler in their article, “Cutting Sales Costs, Not Revenues”, advise companies that, “understanding customers allows companies to focus sales resources where they are needed and to cut waste, not value” (p.2, 2009). Organizations that take time to evaluate the true needs and expectations of current and potential customers achieve cost conservation while improving customer service. Ultimately, it seems that investing in technological…

You’ve identified the issue, and your ultimate goal is to take an action that will solve or address that issue. But we can’t skip right to the end just yet! Before thinking about the solution, consider the other people in the situation. Your decision—even if that decision is to do nothing—will have an effect on some people. We call these people the stakeholders.…

Statistics is the second last strand of the Australian curriculum. It is paired with probability because of “the development that progressively links the two strands” (Australian Curriculum, 2016, para 5). In this area of mathematics I discovered the steps of statistical literacy skills (ABS, 2013, para 1). To confidently identify the statistical skills, I had to understand each step before moving onto the next. The steps were; ability to understand statistical concepts; ability to analyse, interpret and evaluate statistical information and finally, communicate statistical information and understandings. These new findings are explained in my WIKA (appendix k) for topic three. It explains how to correctly store the statistical data in the classroom such as using various graphs which relates to the situation.…

Mollie Orshansky’s definition of poverty is the official definition used in the United States, defined as the “condition of people who cannot afford the necessities of life” (Principles of Microeconomics, 306). We measure poverty by the estimated minimum level of income needed to secure the necessities of life. On the other hand, income inequality is when “one group receives a disproportionate share of total income or wealth than others” (Principles of Microeconomics, 306). Supply and demand in the labor markets is what influences wages, which leads to very high income for some and very low incomes for others. Those with low income enter a poverty trap where antipoverty programs are “set up so that government benefits decline substantially…

The first is whether poverty should be defined in economic terms, or as part of a broader social disadvantage. The economic definition of poverty is typically based on income measures. The poverty line is calculated as the food expenditure necessary to meet dietary recommendations for children. It is then supplemented by a small allowance for nonfood goods according to the Census Bureau. Poor means lacking not only material assets and health. This also includes capabilities for social belonging, cultural identity, respect, dignity, information, and education. (United States Census Bureau, 2015)…

To truly comprehend the profound impact that poverty has had on America, there must first be an understanding of what poverty essentially means and how it was caused. Webster’s dictionary describes poverty as “the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions” (Webster’s Dictionary). The textbook however, offers a more in-depth perspective on the term stating that poverty is “a standard of living below the minimum needed for the maintenance of adequate diet, health and shelter” (Eitzen 181). This definition implies that the poverty threshold is based on those who can make the minimum amount of money required to maintain a decent level of life and those who cannot. Although these particular descriptions of poverty are not necessarily…
