Poem Analysis
The poem opens up with these two lines “In the greenest of our valleys. By good angels tenanted”. Reading this, we think we’re in a heavenly place ("Explanation of: 'The Haunted Palace' by Edgar Allan Poe."). We know this is weird because this isn't Poe’s style. Following that line, it says “Once a fair and stately palace”, this means that the valley is use to be a peaceful place. The “Domain” is the palace that takes over the valley. The poem is describing a kingdom that use to be.
The second stanza confirms that the kingdom is no longer a heavenly place. The palace use to have flags that were flown, but aren’t anymore. Travelers would smell an odor when they pass. We can assume no one lives in the palace
