With all the conflict between people trying to come up with the real reason of Poe’s death, I’ve figured out just what it was. But that’s if you dare to listen that is. Poe was a famous writer that died suddenly, yet the cause remains unknown. There are many theories’ on why he died, but are they all true? Doe really died of rabies, and this is why. Many people believe that he died of alcoholism. However, Poe died of rabies because there’s no clarity in the alcoholism theory.
Poe had nearly stopped drinking. “The writer was so sensitive to alcohol that a glass of wine would make him violently ill for days” (Benitez). If Poe would have gotten ill by drinking very little alcohol, then it’s highly unlikely he died of alcoholism. “Poe had all the features of encephalitic rabies” (Wilde). This shows that Poe could’ve been bitten and infected a long time ago, which would make the diagnosis even harder without the evidence. “when symptoms do appear, the disease is a swift and brutal killer” says the book. This shows that it could’ve been rabies that killed Poe instead of the so called alcoholism story. It also explains why people thought of him to be in a “drunken stupor”. “That is a classic case of rabies” the doctor said. Several other doctors have also confided and backed up the rabies theory.
Poe died of rabies, and this is the reason why people should believe in this theory over alcoholism. Several doctors believe in this theory, Poe had quit drinking, Poe had all the symptoms of rabies, and finally, it can take up for a year for the symptoms to appear and start affecting you.
