Edmond Dantes was an honorable, good man before he was taken and imprisoned on the day of his wedding. He had just returned from a voyage on a ship he was working on for whom the captain had died on the voyage. “it seems to me that a sailor needs not be so old as you say, Danglars, to understand his business, for our friend Edmond seems to understand it thoroughly, and not to require instruction from anyone. Then because he is wrongfully accused by two men and used by another to further his political career while he is left to rot in the worst prison in France. Edmond then makes his escape and becomes the all powerful Count of Monte Cristo. Edmond is a changed man by the time that he comes out of the prison. “He is a man set on revenge, one who has planned meticulously what he will do, and how he will do it.(Taylor)” Edmond Dantes goes through a metamorphosis or something to this effect during the book.
