Leadership is the process of leading and motivating individuals to achieve common goals (Northouse, p. 6). There are many different leadership theories, styles, characteristics, and approaches. Additionally, there has been extensive research on the areas of leadership to provide a better understanding of a successful leader, such as determining the characteristics of a leader, what impact does training have on leadership, and whether leaders are born or made (Riggio, 2009). Research has shown that even though leadership is complex, it can be developed when focusing on personal development and growth (Riggio, 2009).
In 2015, there were approximately 928,000 education administrators in the U.S. at all levels of public and private institutions. About 66% of all educational administrators were women in 2015 (DPE, 2017). Additionally, there were approximately 20 million students attending U.S. college and universities in 2015 (Fast Facts, 2017). As more people pursue higher education, administrators, faculty, and other staff will be necessary to serve the needs of students.
