Measuring the Quality of Models: Malcom Baldrige Model and EFQM
In the 20th century, there were different trends in how manage a company in order to achieve best results and profitability in the business. At the end of this century, the focus of the enterprises had changed, no longer focusing just in the amount of sales so as to be mayors’ product yields but also the quality of products to satisfied customer needs. Today, there are many models and standards to measure quality; among these is the EFQM model (European Foundation for Quality Management), which is the framework for Europe and the Malcolm Baldrige is an award that recognizes U.S. organizations in the business, health care, education, and nonprofit sectors for performance excellence. Is the EFQM model better than Beldrige model?
The Baldrige Award was created in 1987. This model was influenced by benchmarking movement, making a model which allowed each enterprise to measure its activities against a wide set of standardized criteria through which to compare, also help organization assess their improvement efforts and think in a strategically way, and help to strengthen U.S. competitiveness. According to Baldrige Award, the objectives of this award are: raise sufficient funds to establish an endowment which oversee the investment of endowment funds; review program accomplishments; disburse required fund to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST); and review the plan and approve associated funds requirements for subsequent years (Brennan, 2013). The Baldrige Award is the only official recognition of the performance excellence of the U.S. organizations (public or private) given by the President of the United States.
