Motivation is important for student success because that is what keeps us going in our quest for greater knowledge. If somebody had to sit for 8 hours a day and read a stack of books in front of him or her every day, but was not told which book to read, or why they had to read them it would not make a lot of sense. The person who had to read the books maybe would look at the titles and perhaps even read one of them, but boredom would set in. That is where motivation comes in.…
When asked why they go to school, most students will say to please their parents or to have a good career. What they don’t realize is that school is more than just that. School is about building good people and to make you your best person. It all depends on what the teachers do to encourage their students. If the teacher isn’t interested in what they are teaching, the students will not have the drive to learn either.…
A lack of motivation could occur if a student is uninterested in the subject(s) being taught or if they are erroneously placed in a vocational track (Rose 346). Students may also begin to think if the teacher, isn’t going to go out of their way to give additional help to the students that need it to succeed, than they shouldn’t bother to study. In the essay “I Just Wanna Be Average” by Mike Rose, he talks about his time spent in the vocational track and how he began to lose interest in all subjects and began to loath…
Students lack motivation because they are not inspired to learn more literacy skills. Motivation is a person’s desire to act in a positive way. Students may lack motivation because students think that studying for a test and doing their school work can be boring. The only student should make short term goals and aim to achieve them. For example, my short-term goal is to complete my history assignment before the deadline on Saturday by midnight. Students should be social in education. Participating in class and communicating with classmates can be very helpful and develop new friends along the way. In addition,…
Successful students are motivated by what their goals represent in terms of career aspirations and life's desires. Ask yourself these questions: What am I doing here? Is there some better place I could be? What does my presence here mean to me?Answers to these questions represent your "Hot Buttons" and are, without a doubt, the most important factors in your success as a college student. If your educational goals are truly yours, not someone else's, they will motivate a vital and positive academic attitude. If you are familiar with what these hot buttons represent and refer to them often, especially when you tire of…
Two approaches to used to understand motivation in adolescence are Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation emphasizes that students want to believe that what they are doing is because of their own decision or their own will and for no other reason. Students' motivation and interest in school tasks increase when they have opportunities to makes their own choices and they take responsibility for their own learning. Students become more motivated to learn when given choices, apply themselves in challenges matching their skills, and want to do things for the informational value. Extrinsic motivation factors are rewards and punishments and they were found to have many more negative outcomes on students achievements and commitments. What tended to have negative outcomes were when students were given framed goals, students that believed in obtaining good grades for the sole purpose of avoiding their parents' approval, and students that seemed to have no independence in deciding their goals.…
Motivation can be defined as the driving force behind all the actions of an individual. The influence of an individual's needs and desires both have a strong impact on the direction of their behavior. Motivation is based on your emotions and achievement-related goals. When you feel like the world is against you and you would rather stay in bed and wallow, rather than go out there and face the world again. Your motivation is not going to be at an all-time high. Motivation stems from components that involve the drive and performance of learned responses, such as a learned behavior will not occur unless it is energized.…

First and foremost, motivated students are the attributes of their education, in view of the fact that students must work for the education in order to receive it. Consider us students per se being on the edge of pass or fail…
As someone who has been combatting depression for years, I know first hand how hard it is to work up the motivation for the simplest of activities. Even the things you would really like to do become seemingly impossible tasks. That being said, when it comes to bigger areas such as improving my art, or writing skills, the valley between development and myself appears insurmountably wide. However, school seems to motivate me quite a bit. When a professor assigns me something important, and gives me a due date, I am forced to start and finish that assignment.…
Last week when I attended, there were significantly less students in class than in the previous weeks, around 10 compared to the usual 20. That same day, one student came to class, but he was not his usual self and seemed very quiet and reserved. He usually sits in the front, but this day he sat in the back, and did not even attempt the worksheet as he usually does with the help of a mentor. Another mentor in the room kept trying to get him to participate and maybe try a couple of problems, but he would not comply. The teacher even noticed something was up, and she told us to only work with him if he wants to, and because his motivation was simply not there due to outside factors, we could not help him. This example shows the effect motivation has on the students’ academic performance.…

When I was 13, I was diagnosed with a rather severe anxiety disorder. I was unable to function in the world in which I was living. Every day was a struggle and I was plagued with self-doubt. Everything in my life was more than I could handle and almost every day ended in tears and a fight with my parents. It felt as if my life was falling apart and there was nothing I could do about it. Thankfully, my parents realized that something was wrong and were able to find a therapist who gave me the help that I needed. When my anxiety disorder was first diagnosed, I was at the beginning of Erikson’s Identity vs. Role Confusion stage (Polan & Taylor, 2015, p. 66). Around the beginning of adolescence, the adolescent constantly thinks about…
Delivering educational material to high school students can be a taxing feat. Students can become overwhelmed and discouraged. Motivating students, through the establishment of entertaining learning activities and incorporating versatile methods of teaching as well as ; collaborating the efforts of teachers and parents to motivate students to perform optimally in class, enabling them to successfully graduate along with their peers. Motivation is the reason one acts or behaves. Motivation is what moves humanity both in an individual and general sense. The power of motivation is undeniable. If harnessed correctly one can achieve great and terrible things. To better understand motivation many people have attempted to explain motivation in a general sense that would apply in any situation. One such person was Abraham Maslow. He created the hierarchy of needs. However, the hierarchy fails to properly explain motivation. This becomes obviously when set aside the life of an individual. I will use the story of Jeanette Walls to disprove Maslow’s hierarchy.…
