Eisenhower High School Should Start Later Essay
Imagine staying up late studying for exams, then waking up at 6:00 in the morning, rushing to get ready, then go to school for 7 hours and 30 minutes then repeat everyday. Well that what students at Eisenhower High School and Middle School have to face everyday. Being half asleep during school makes it hard to learn and remember all the tasks you must do after school. Many students don’t want to be falling asleep and would rather do the best they can do in school but it’s hard to do that when you are falling asleep in you're classes due to an early start time and lack of sleep. I robustly believe that the school hour should start later in the day. Eisenhower High School needs to change the early hour they start at so students can perform their academic best. Unquestionably, many students are not learning all they can due to lack of sleep. Studies have shown that students brains do not wake up or start working until later in the morning. It is recommended that students get 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep each night, but many students get less hours than what is recommended. Studies have also said that with lack of sleep students are more likely to develop depression or have high rates of obesity. Students …show more content…

Certainly, students would not be as miserable if the school hour would start later in the day. If the school hour started later then students would not have to stumble around, half asleep in the morning. Many students are miserable and tired in the morning, many students are falling asleep in classes causing them to fail tests. Because they are tired and failing tests it is creating upset students, so if the school day started later no students would be tired, asleep, or failing tests which would also create happy teachers. For these reasons, I strongly believe the school day should start later to prevent miserable and tired

In the article “Our kids need more sleep” Written by Valerie Erde, she makes many good points about why school should be set back to a later time. First is how it increases academic alertness and vigilance. Second, is how a later start time decreases depression in teens and decreases tardiness and decreases truancy. Last, is how this later start time is actually helping the students get better grades. I one hundred percent agree with this and believe these policies should definitely be implemented.…

Of all the things high school students complain about, being sleep deprived and tired ranks first as most problematic. The issue isn’t that kids simply choose not to get enough sleep; it is that the majority genuinely cannot. Students are constantly being badgered by parents, doctors and school faculty to get at least eight hours of sleep, but with school starting as early as 7:20, that makes getting a decent amount of sleep an almost impossible task. Though there are numerous other reasons as to why students are lacking sleep, the start time of school is ultimately the main contributor and leads to many severely negative results. A policy causing high schools to start at 8:30 instead would greatly improve the number of better rested students.…

Certainly it could be said that if school starts later, then it will end later; while this is a good point, it fails to account for the loss of sleep caused by early start times. The Scholastic Scope article explains “For one thing starting school late means dismissing school later, which leaves fewer daylight hours for after school activities like sports” (O’Neil 21). Although this is true, many students arrive at school later because they do not get enough sleep. While some might argue that starting school later means that districts will have to invest in busses and drivers, they forget that starting school later will help align school schedules with sleep schedules. For instance, the article explains “School bus schedules are arranged to meet the needs of not just one school but all schools in the district” (O’Neil 21). Even though there would need to be more buses to meet the needs for all schools, kids would be more alert in class. Some people may argue that starting school later brings the wrong message to kids. The Scholastic Scope article says “Being on time, managing a busy schedule, and getting enough sleep are important skills teens will need to know when they enter the workforce” (O’Neil 21). In contrast, starting school later would help kids stay physically and mentally healthy. Starting school later will help students academically succeed and stay mentally…

Most of the time when students start earlier they are just exhausted, and on top of that, teachers cram their brains with information and pile them with homework. On average, students in school should range from about eight to eleven hours of sleep a night. By starting school later, it would help the students’ brain to recover from the required amount of sleep to stay healthy and energized up for a new day. Students who start later and end at the same time as usual would still be rested up and still have the energy to be able to do any out of school activities that would be great for a resume or just for personal hobbies.…

One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…
