Ellen Prager’s spectacular and intriguing book, Chasing Science at Sea, is a non-fiction compilation of many field stories by marine scientist of all fields. Each of these stories contain its own unique element of activities and objectives. The purpose of this book is to inform the generations to come about marine science, and the hands on activities that come with marine science. The scientist aboard the field mission seemed to all be happy and loving of their occupation. Each one had a humorous personality as they took their job seriously, but with many practical jokes. The pressure and precaution of removing aquanauts during a tropical storm or hurricane, is very well detailed to explain the reality of the stressful task. With hard work comes reward and Prager stresses that a lot, she explains the feeling of the acceptance as another member of a reef community, which is big title in her field of science.
Prager compares real life situations that are made easier or fixed by the use of science. Her stories pinpoint the use of many principles of science that we use in our everyday life. When I read this book i almost felt as if i was coming out of my comfort zone, when i would read the some of the stories. Her use of brains and guts, gave the projects a safe structure. When I thought things would take a turn for the worst, but each story ended with a laugh of awe.
Chasing Science at Sea written by Ellen Prager was an overall good humored and educational book. The details were very well put of by the author with a moderate level of writing. The informative stories shows a great deal of the life of a marine scientist. I would recommend this read to anyone interested in pursuing a career in marine
