Elora Yochum Analysis
It is a pleasure for me to write a reference for Miss Elora Yochum. I have known Elora for the past three years as her Drama classroom teacher and director. We have also remained in close contact during the past year as she attends the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts, and I have witnessed her growth as both a young woman and an artist during that time. To know Elora is to be around someone who is passionate, determined, charismatic, and fun. She can bring sunshine into the darkest room with her sweet smile and positive demeanor. Knowing and directing Elora has been nothing but a privilege.

Elora is a natural performer so, when she was cast in her first production with the SAHS Drama program, it was not a surprise that she would do very well. The practice schedule for members of the South Aiken High School Drama Club can be quite rigorous; however, Elora proved to be the perfect cast member right from the start. She is passionate about theater, so it is a natural environment for her. South Aiken’s Drama Club is an intense experience, because students are in full control of the production. As such, they build sets, find and create costumes, cast the production, and bond into an ensemble unit to create a unified illusion on the stage. Our students

Her determination and diligence to both fulfilling her own dreams, and sharing her art with others makes her a truly remarkable young woman. Her love for theater and her positive personality make her a real asset to younger students who are working in this artistic medium for the first time. Her loyalty and dedication to the SAHS program mean the world to me, and I am honored to have her think so highly of us. There is no doubt in my mind that Elora will be a success in this field. She has shown, through her passion, her role as a mentor, and her own experience, that theater is her true

Have you ever wondered where the origins of theatre began? It is a well-known fact that the earliest forms of drama were developed in Ancient Greek by philosophers interested in using entertainment for social and philosophical commentary. It is essential that young people are exposed to the earliest form of scripted drama as it provides a foundation for understanding dramatic styles and conventions which are the basis for all the theatre which followed.…

However, the performer is responsible for bringing that to life. The performer is receptive of artistic and expressive interpretations. A simple tap move with a four bar count can motivate others to create a dozen different expressive variations. When I finally performed on stage, I outpoured my excitement and uneasiness on that stage. I cherished every minute of it. I imagined objects, feelings, and people in my mind as I performed for Rosie’s Theatre Kids. I was no longer rehearsing for a singular performance. I realized I was rehearsing for life. The lessons learned on this journey helped mature and facilitate my transition into a confident young…

The piece was a devised piece of drama called ‘Fire’, set in 2011 in the outskirts of London. It was about a schizophrenic teenage girl whose conscience persuaded her to undertake risky activities. The stimulus for our play was a song called ‘I hate Mondays’ from which we fashioned a piece of physical theatre on. We also used gun crime statistics as well as the life of 50 cent to help develop and influence our drama. I played the part of Olivia’s conscience and also her teacher. For the character of the conscience I wore simple black clothing, identical to Olivia’s to symbolize being her. When playing the conscience I altered my movement to delicate yet sneaky. The makeup was very simple to keep to the naturalism of the play. I also played the part of the teacher, wearing a tie to symbolize the character change. The genre of the piece was a psychological drama and the style was non-naturalistic with elements of naturalism. We used several techniques to improve our piece such as flashbacks, narration and physical theatre to keep the audience interested. It was set in the 21st century, the year 2011. I acted alongside 4 other girls in an intimate drama studio setting with raked seating with an end on stage. Throughout the play we used simple a lighting design that included spotlights, to add emphasis on monologues; slow fades to indicate the end of a scene and a blackout for a sudden end. We also used red gels for a surreal atmosphere in the dream scene. In addition, songs such as ‘Hide and Seek’ by Imogen Heap were used to create a mysterious, dark atmosphere. Our target audience was 15+ as some of the concepts were quite mature ie, sexual abuse and arson. We used 1 frame which acted as a door and a mirror. A rostra in centre back of the stage was used as a bed. We didn’t use many props except from a few wine bottles, gasoline tubs and ripped pieces of paper in the ending sequence to symbolize the fire.…

From singing Phantom of the Opera in the shower to pretending to be Mimi Marquez swinging from the wooden bars and ladder of my bunk bed belting melodies from my favorite show, Rent. My mother implanted theatre into my heart since the beginning. But I was always missing just one aspect of the magic I knew, performing. I yearned to hear the patter of my feet on the stage, for my voice to echo throughout a theater during a rehearsal, to transform into a different person and tell their story. But when I was younger I guess it just wasn't my time yet. My family didn’t really have the money to enroll me in any sort of performing arts program and our town lacked a theatre program in schools until high school. Performing in the comforts of my own bedroom would have to do until I got to high school. Once I got to high school I eagerly auditioned for the 2 shows they produced a year, desperate to finally be on a stage. Yet, there was something missing from the experience, I wasn’t aware of it at the time and it wasn’t until my friend Kevin pulled me aside during one of our rehearsals and informed me about the pre professional theatre company he was apart of. Soon enough I convinced my mother to sign me up for theatre camp at Gaslamp Academy of Performing Arts. Essentially it’s where I found myself as a performer and as a person. Before the program I hadn’t ever taken risks or made choices on stage as a character and as myself in life. If I was ever in a place with the opportunity to meet new people I wouldn’t take advantage of it, usually I’d wait until people came up to talk to me because I just couldn’t bring myself to talk to people. My confidence was at an all time low before Gaslamp, I didn't believe that I could accomplish anything. However, spending 8 hours a day for a month with a group of accepting, loving, intellectual, inspiring people changed me and I learned so much about myself that I…

Stage was fully designed, lights are expensively done, performers ready, crowds screaming for excitement for this years musical play by the fourth year AB Mass Comunnication students “The Wicked: The untold story of The Witches of Oz”. Students continously passing through the venue as the show was about to start and it was almost filled with crowd. Walking inside the Bulwagang Diego Cera really felt the excitement of the crowd because of the extravagant lighting, sound effects, stage design, everything was pleasing to the eyes and was very magical. As the curtains opened, the show started smoothly with cheerful crowds amazed by the appearance of the Ozians, the student of the Shiz University and the two main characters Glinda or Galinda as she prefer people to pronouce her name she was the popular good witch which was played by Maricris Soriano and Elphaba the unnaturally green skinned lady that turned out to be the wicked witch which was played by Michelle Areglado. Really felt like watching a professional stage play performers by these students because of their undeniably great acts during the show. Amazing lights and sound effects added a huge thrill while watching each scenes of the show that keeps the crowd wanting to know more about the story it also gives much success to each scene especially when Elphaba the green skinned lady peformed the amazing act the “Defying Gravity” scene. Felt nothing but goosebumps all throughout the show, plus the amazing voices of all the performers. Not a fan of musical plays but this is such a great show to watch that can really catch the attention of the viewers. Entertained and amazed faces filled the Bulwagang Diego Cera as the musical play came to its end. Amazing story was really played by these year’s musical play of AB Mass Communication students. “Changed for good” as the moral lesson of the story says, I think all of us we’re changed for good after…

    Sinderela Play

Last December 9, we went to Aliw Theater to watch the play “Sinderela”. The show started at 3:00pm. Before the real play started, there was some introductory play that was held. There were some ballet dancers and some foreign musicians that kept the audience entertained. I found it very interesting because they have been moving in sync, all at the same time. It lasted for 1 hour, and after the Introductory Part, they were given a big round of applause for their outstanding performance. A 10-minute break was given to the audience before the Sinderela Play starts. After that 10-minute break, the play started. The introduction to the play was so creative. They used Tableau Vivant, a motionless performance in theater. After that, the play started. It was very entertaining, I did not feel boredom. I really appreciated the ballet performance, even if I don’t do ballet. The performance is very creative, easily understood even of you don’t do ballet, yet it is full of humor. After the play, we went to Star City to enjoy the rides. From the play, I learned that speaking or reading is not the only ways to give message to the audiences, even dancing can give these important messages. Even if you don’t do dancing or singing, as long as you put your focus on one thing, you will definitely understand the meaning of it. You don’t have to be anything to understand everything. It’s just a matter of focus and attention. While watching the Sinderela Play, I can really see and understand what the dancers are trying to tell the audiences. For me, it was pretty clear. The moral of this play is you can be everything you want; all you need is faith, never falter, and hold strongly to your beliefs. We should not let anybody stop us from doing what we want. Also, we should not do the things we have to do, but we should do the right…
