Emma Watson’s HeforShe Speech Analysis
The purpose of Emma Watson’s speech at the UN headquarters in New York was to launch the HeforShe campaign and to outline what the true meaning of feminism is supposed to be. In the course of convincing the audience, and showing reasons to join the fight, the speaker uses three rhetorical methods which are Ethos, pathos and logos.
In Emma Watson’s speech, she uses Ethos to exhibit her credibility. By relating to her life experiences, she helps the audience to see that

Shirley Chisholm made many rhetorical choices in her speech. She used diction, pathos, and repetition in her speech. She used these different rhetorical devices for different reasons. First, she used diction in her speech when she used terms like "minority", "different", "inferior", and "prejudice". When she used these terms, she made the argument that they aren't equal to men in the workplace.…

In the commencement address by Rita Dove, she inspires the graduating class of the University of Virginia to put themselves out in the real world and take risks as she “wishes” challenges on them and prepares them for the uncertainties that come in the future. The repetition of “150%” allows the graduates to understand how crucial it is to always be ready for the unexpected. While others will not know if you’re giving your best effort, you will feel it within yourself, so it’s important that going into the real world the graduates are aware of how the attitude and mindset will follow them. Dove shares her own experiences where she gave that final “150%” and was able to accomplish things that were never possible without her best efforts.…

This scene is replete with ethos to the audience she is performing the speech to, because they are her fellow students who have watched her grow into a bright, respected, mature lawyer. Ethos simply means the appeal to the speaker’s own character or credibility, marking their words as believable and/or genuine. Professor Stomwell introduces Elle, “I am, personally, very honored to introduce this year’s class-elected speaker… I am sure we are going to see great things from her.” This introduction to the scene allows the audience to be aware of Elle’s outstanding achievements throughout her college career, as well as her respectable reputation from the professor and being class-elected, her fellow students. Her classmates know of her failures and successes, therefore she is credible to give a speech about passion, and the passion allows her to seem more sincere in her words. She must also be given a great deal of ethos for being chosen as the Harvard graduate who is selected to speak at the ceremony. However, when Elle ends the speech with “Congratulations Class of 2004 – We did it!” This self-reference of “we” allows the audience to trust Elle, in knowing they all did this together,…

Truth brings out the best, braiding ethos, pathos, and logos together to make a strong argument for women's and African Americans' rights. Thus, applying ethos and appealing to pathos, she seeks to give credibility from the vantage of personal experience as both a former slave and a woman, hence one who has legitimacy by experience to speak with regard to matters of race and gender. She uses pathos at the same time when she tells the grievance of the mother whose babies were sold to slavery, her experiences with racist and gender violence, thus touching the most sensitive strings of their identity—arousing emotions that would be paid attention to by the public. Besides, use of logical argumentation (logos) is observable when Truth speaks of…

Emma Watson's speech demonstrated all of these aspects and is therefore a good example of modern-day agency. To begin, Watson began her speech with a call to action stating, "We want to end gender inequality-- and to do that we need everyone to be involved. " This is a direct example of the first part of the agency; she invites everyone in the audience to be a part of something greater than themselves and direct them to participate and get involved with this communal value. She continues to demonstrate this agency by delivering a speech…

In America, there used to be unfair laws and regulations regarding labor. Children are put to work in harsh conditions, conditions often deemed difficult even for adults, and are forced to work ridiculous hours. In Emma Watson’s speech “Gender Equality is Your Issue Too,” she uses persuasive techniques to convince the audience to participate in her program He For She and to fight against gender inequality because it is a serious issue that affects everyone. Watson is inclusive in her argument against gender inequality, which she highlights in paragraph 20 by recounting, “I’ve seen my father’s role as a parent being valued less by society, despite my needing his presence as a child as much as my mother’s. " The quote uses an anecdote to emphasize the speaker's personal exposure to the issue. This gives her more credibility because it demonstrates that she has experienced inequality’s effects firsthand and it directly affects her and the people around…

Both men and women should feel free to be strong… It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum not as two opposing sets of ideals,” a quote from Emma’s speech delivered at the United Nations Headquarters for the HeForShe campaign (UN Women). After the events that followed the end of the Harry Potter films and her graduation from Brown University, Emma Watson was chosen to be the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador to apply her knowledge and voice to advocate for gender equality as well as allowing women from different countries and cultures to be empowered to stand up for their rights and to fight for what they believe in (UN Women). Using Hermione as her inspiration, Emma Watson believes that as long as you have your books, your knowledge through education, and a kind heart, any answers you are looking for will be found. She also believes that gender equality isn’t solely about feminism, where just women fight for their rights, but also a problem men face too. Society does tend to put stereotypes on gender and define males with masculinity and females with femininity, but never allowing to either attribute some qualities of both. Therefore, Emma wants to invite both men and women to join the fight for gender equality. Many people may know her as the “Harry Potter girl,” therefore might not take her seriously, but Emma knows that and she wants her words to mean something and hopefully inspire individuals to stand up because she wants to see progress occur (UN Women). Hopefully these words will ignite actions, which is her main…
