Empowerment and a strengths perspective
Empowerment and a strengths perspective which support the development of innate abilities and recognize differences in a positive manner are also helping social workers increase the individual client’s or patient’s capacity to learn to use his or her own systems constructively. More than a simple linguistic nuance, the notion that social workers do not empower others, but instead, help people empower themselves is an ontological distinction that frames the reality experienced by both social workers and clients (Simon, 1990, p. 32, quoted in Saleeby, 2006, p. 98).

In the article, Education: A Complex and Empowering Social Work Intervention at the End of Life, John G. Cagle and Pamela J. Kovacs focus on the importance of education as an intervention. In this essay I will be looking into the different ways of intervening with a client in the event of a crisis and how a person understands and manages personal change through the transitional cycle of change. Communication is crucial in all social work intervention whether it is with individuals, families groups or communities. I choose this article for two reasons. First, not too long ago, my father was diagnosed with cancer and at the end the doctors came to conclusion that there is more treatment for him. My father was under the hospice program. Therefore, my family and I dealt with two social workers and few nurses. Second, since I met those two social workers, I knew what I want to do for my future; to become a social worker and work at a hospital. Finally, this article may relate to my work

As Social Workers we must keep this in mind as some clients may not want to self-advocate. In order to empower them we must not only provide counseling resources as it is a basic universal need, but advocate against the stigma of mental illness (Dubois & Miley, 2014). As David Soyer discussed in his article Reverie on working with the aged, the groups of people Social Workers aid can drastically affect Social Workers personally and professionally (1969). Many Social Workers can struggle from “burn out”. In order to work and be healthy we must remember to care for our mental health as…

However, it is the agency that utilizes an empowerment-focused attitude and the theories that support them that has been an area of centralized research for many organizations for several years. It is the utilization of an empowerment approach within the agency that ensures that if the client can receive services or aid, it will given or done so in a manner that is both respectful as well without bias. At any agency, it should be understood that no matter what we want empowerment to be used not only to lift up the client but also to help to encourage the clients to do better each and every day. It is by using approaches aimed to promote positive energy and strength-based approaches along with…

Social Workers value the maximum feasible self – determination, empowerment, and enhancing strengths to increase the client’s voice in decision making. ‘The Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EAPS) affirm the commitment of social programs to the core values of the profession: service, social justice, dignity, and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, competence, human rights, and scientific inquiry’ (NASW, 2008 A; CSWE, 2008; as per Hepworth, Glenda and Kim, 2010). Social Workers demonstrate respect for and acceptance of the unique characteristics of ‘diverse populations that are characterized by great diversity, including the intersection of dimensions such as age, class, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender, identity and expression, immigration status, political ideology, race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation, religion, physical or mental ability, age, and national origin’ (CSWE, 2008; as per Hepworth, Glenda, and Kim,…

    Cowger Matrix Of Framework

Although diagnosis is important, when social workers focus only on deficits or diagnosis, they may fail to also look at strengths and resources. Cowger Matrix Framework for Assessment was developed in an attempt to avoid focus on only deficits and more on the needs and strengths of individual clients (Hepworth et al, 2013). Cowger Matrix of Framework has four sections; strengths or resources and deficits, challenges or obstacles which are on a vertical axis and environmental factors (family and community) and individual or personal factors which are on a horizontal axis. The framework gives social workers a visual perspective that they can identify both needs and strengths and how they are related to environment or individual factors. In a scenario presented about a family whose father is in prison for sexually assaulting one of his children, we will focus on one of the children; a young girl named Lorene using the Cowger Matrix of Framework for Assessment. In this hypothetical scenario, I am a social worker at a middle school where Lorene attends. Before I meet with Lorene, I need to understand what a strength or asset is and how to define it properly. Saleeby describes the Lexicon of Strengths as; plasticity, empowerment, membership, resilience and healing and wholeness (2013). By helping Lorene understand her strengths whereas before she may have not known existed will enable…

During the first year of the course I have become more aware of the importance of personal and professional development. I agree with Thompson (2002), who states that the development of personal and professional skills is fundamental to becoming a competent social worker and making the transition from student to practitioner. Therefore professional development is essential to social work students and practitioners to increase…

    Reflection In Social Work

Reflecting back on this course, my impression on the field of Social Work embraces that this fields rests far more diverse and incriminated into society than I previously thought; “Not only do they help the individuals cope with the situation at hand, they advocate for them and seek out valuable resources and other means of support for the affected person(s)” (XXX). Prior to this course, I detained a misconception that social workers predominantly counseled individuals, when in reality, social workers integrate collaboration, advocacy, investigating, counseling, planning, monitoring, and organizing into their occupational responsibilities. Assisting in a vast array of societal facets, social workers rely on theories and frameworks to pilot…
