A person can realize what they committed was immoral and make a difference in society as a whole, but essentially himself or herself. For instance, in Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card, Ender enters the bugger queen’s hive to find her egg and has a vision of the queen communicating with him. past actions has matured him into a smarter and pacifistic person that wants to compensate for killing a whole race of buggers, to ultimately become a better person.
He is deeply touched by the vision with the queen and takes the egg as a reminder of what he was. However, Ender’s responsibility to spread the queen’s message is a foreshadow of what he will be. The egg is like a peace treaty to his people to show that the buggers were unhostile creatures unlike Ender and his people. Therefore, he wants become a person that will not shy away from his mistakes but fix them. Also, Bethany Hamilton, a professional surfer, survived a shark attack but lost her left arm at the age of thirteen. Despite the trauma of the incident, three weeks later, she was adamant to return back to surfing by teaching herself how to surf with only one arm. Bethany Hamilton’s near death experience has evoked a sense of determination in her that has caused her to be one of the best surfers in the world. Insteads of grieving about the accomplishments she could have had prior, she has achieved those accomplishments. The next two years following her attack, she
won the ESPY Award for Best Comeback Athlete and first place in the Explorer Women’s Division in the NSSA National Competition. Her achievements show her determined spirit and positive attitude that were ignited from a devastating encounter with a shark. Bethany Hamilton’s views her disability not as a hinderer but as a symbol of pulling her through adversity.
A person’s will to choose to make their life better is an influence from a negative life experience. People all go through times of joy, pain, guiltiness, etc. One who likes to live a life solely of pleasure and joy, is oblivious of the fact that adverse life experiences are just as important as positive times. They too make a person who they are.
