The Hero Cycle In Ender's Game By Orson Scott Card
Through his observations, Joseph Campbell discovered a pattern called the Hero’s Cycle, in which no matter the culture all heroes follow. In the book, Ender’s Game written by Orson Scott Card, the main character Ender follows the typical Hero’s Cycle. In Ender’s world the humans are planning to destroy their alien enemy the Buggers. When Ender was six years old the government sent him off to Battle School, the first step in making him into a someone that could command the human army against the Buggers. Because of his talents, and the government's despair, he progressed at a quicker rate than the others. He graduates from Battle School at an early age and progresses to the highest school called Command School. At the age of 12 while doing what …show more content…
In the country that Ender lives in the government has restricted the amount of children each family can have. The government's limit is two children per family, but he is the third child of the family. In school right after he got his monitor taken away Ender thinks to himself, “It was not his fault he was a Third. It was the government's idea, they were the ones who authorized it - how else could a Third like Ender have got into school” (7)? This quote proves that even Ender realizes that he is abnormal because he is a Third child. He understands that the only reason he is alive is because the government allowed his parents to have another child. Although he does not know this, the reason why the government approved of him being born is because his older brother and sister showed promising qualities, but did not have the right balance of cruelness and empathy. Ender showed the same promising qualities as his siblings, but unlike them he also showed having the right balance between showing cruelness and empathy. Because of Ender’s characteristics, it made him the perfect candidate for them to shape into a commander that would win the war. Not only does Ender fit the Hero’s Cycle due to his abnormal birth, but he also fits the Hero Cycle because of the challenges that he faces that build his moral strength and …show more content…
After the war was over the humans’ started settling were the Buggers were living. When exploring this planet Ender found a message that the Buggers were trying to convey to him. In their message to him they said to him, “We did not mean to murder, and when we understood, we never came again” (224). The Buggers shared their memories, grieves, and hopes with Ender. They asked Ender to take the egg of the new queen and find a world in which they could thrive in. Not only did Ender do this but he promised to tell their story in hopes that the humans in time would forgive the Buggers. He conveyed their story and combined it with the wisdom he has gained through the book he wrote. He signed the book as The Speaker of the Dead. In the book Ender wrote everything from a perspective of a Bugger queen. He described The Bugger’s achievements, and goals for the future. He also pointed out their flaws as well as their greatness. Lastly he added that they were sorry, and forgave the humans for killing them. This book was read by nearly everyone on Earth, and was transformed into a religion. His book allowed humans to gain an understanding that they never had of the buggers. Many people tried to live by the words in the book, striving to become better people. After a death of a loved one they would ask someone to write a piece similar to Ender’s. Although Ender did not physically go back to Earth, he used his

The sunlight, levels of gravity and the curve of the ground was unfamiliar to Ender; given time he fell to love Earth for the short time he spent there, post-Battle School. Shortly after his return, he goes to Command School on Eros, that the Bugger’s had built prior to the overthrow. The ceilings are extremely low, passages are narrow, the floor slopes downward, and the lower gravity is discomforting. Ender spends a good amount of time in the stimulation room, where it turns out he is actually commanding the fleets. After his success, he leaves for the first human colony on a former bugger world, which becomes: Ender’s World. While on the search for another group of colonists, he realized that the landscape mimicked a fantasy game that he had played in Battle School, where the buggers communicated with Ender and ironically lead him to their hive…

The war between the buggers and humanity has ended, yet Ender has lost all happiness. Throughout the novel, the Battle School tested Ender through a series of games. Whether the games be face-to-face or through a computer, these games have had meaning. The games have impacted Ender’s entire life. A continual theme throughout Card's novel is that games do not exist in opposition to reality. The author shows that every action has a meaning. Even when the action has been manipulated, changed, or not understood, it still has a meaning to it. In all of the games that Ender played, each one was unfair or misunderstood. In these circumstances, Ender must think about the big picture and not the small details. On top of that, Ender tends to hurt his…

Do you think you could handle having the fate of the world in your hands? Well, this prodigy of a kid called Ender Wiggin did not think he could handle it, he could not even handle fighting with his brother Peter. In the book Enders Game, a science fiction novel, Ender Wiggin is called upon to train in the International Fleet to become a commander and fight against the buggers. In his journey he faces many obstacles in trying to do so. I believe the book Ender’s Game is much better than the film because of the development of characters and events that happens in the book, and the hardship Ender faces to become a great leader against the buggers.…

In “Ender’s Game” the “others” are the “buggers”. ‘Buggers are out there…with weapons we don’t understand. And a willingness to use those weapons to wipe us out.’ (Page 35, Ender’s Game) The “buggers” are portrayed as evil beings. ‘Wont split her head open with a beam so hot that her brains burst the skill & spill out…’ (Page 93, Ender’s Game) The “buggers” being part of “Ender’s Game” in the way they are portrayed, increases Ender’s heroism (although he does not interact with them directly), as he is the one to save the world & humanity by killing the “buggers” for the “world” in which is the human race. A similarity is shown in “Hare Moon” with the “Unconsecrated” being depicted as the “others”. ‘…There’s no escaping the Unconsecrated. They shuffle along the fences, pushing, pulling & grating & needing.’ (Page 220, Hare Moon) They, similar to the “buggers”, are also described to be malevolent. ‘They need to Infect. The Unconsecrated never leave a fresh kill if they can sense more blood to be Infected.’ (Page 220, Hare Moon) Tabitha’s heroism is amplified by the “Unconsecrated” as she unwillingly endeavours to destroy them as they (“Unconsecrated”) attempt to wipe out Tabitha’s world. Within both of these texts, Ender & Tabitha do not directly wish to eliminate the “other” but do so for the greater good of their own society. This indirect elimination of…

The important beings that Ender attempts to understand are the buggers. In numerous events of the story, Ender is in a situation where the thoughts and sights of a bugger come across him. Ender always tries to imagine the perspective of a bugger. When he plays a game where he pretended to be a bugger, he tries to feel how it thinks. “He put on the mask. Imagine if, from the age of six, you grew up in a school where the smartest kids in the world were trained to be ruthless military commanders, and on top of that the school is in outer space. That was the world Ender Wiggin grew up in. I don't know about you but that doesn't sound like a normal childhood to me. Let me explain, the year is roughly 2100, In order to develop an unbreakable defense against an aggressive alien race's next offensive, government agencies make child geniuses and train them as commanders. An ingenious child, Andrew “Ender” Wiggin lives with his sadistic older brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anybody else, his older sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were also contenders for the battle school program…
