Caffeine, “the primary ingredient in energy drinks, and its levels can vary widely” (Sifferlin), is a stimulant of the nervous system, and it is a classification of methamphetamine. Guarana is a plant from South America that contains a caffeine compound known as guarnine, where one gram of guarana is equal to 40 mg of caffeine. Sugar, also found in almost all energy drinks can come in the form of sucrose, glucose, or high fructose corn syrup. Energy drinks can increase heart rate and alertness. Overconsumption can lead to seizures and obviously sleeplessness” (Robertson 73). Drinker, especially adolescents, do not need that type of energy. Caffeine blocks the effects of adenosine, a chemical that can make one sleepy.
