Nursing as a profession is stressful enough having to deal with death and grief on a regular basis and there is an average of 25% of European nurses suffering from burnout of some degree. (Freeney and Tiernan, 2009). Research has found that work engagement is improved by structural empowerment (Laschinger et al. 2009), and this is associated with higher job satisfaction and lower burnout rates. Numerous authors support the claim that higher levels of engagement at work are created in work environments where nurses feel they have empowerment, where they feel rewarded and feel they are been treated fairly for their work.     I was hospitalized for three weeks at Seattle Children’s after enduring emergency surgery to remove a rare tumor in my large intestine. What I figured was random stomach pain was life threatening. Since I have endured so much in my life, it is not easy for me to be emotional. When I found out that I needed surgery in a mere few hours I did not know how to process my emotions. Being in the hospital taught me that I need to take what may seem meaningless as something that could be serious. I learned to face emotions instead of avoiding them.     Othman and Mohd Nasurdin (2011) investigated the relationship between hope and resilience with work engagement in 422 staff nurses working in three public hospitals in Malaysia. The regression analysis revealed that hope and resilience were positive factors which related to work engagement. Possible reasons for these findings, as well as their implications and future research directions are discussed. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of hope and resilience on work engagement. Othman and Mohd Nasurdin’s (2011) findings revealed that hope was a significant predictor of work engagement. Likewise, resilience was also found to be related to work engagement. This is consistent with those of previous researchers. As mentioned by McGrath, Reid and Boore (2003), nurses are unceasingly faced with sufferings, deaths and grief of patients and in addition to that have repetitive tasks to accomplish. Under such circumstances, psychological capital (hope and resilience) may possibly to be one of the crucial resources that are necessary for individuals to cope with the demanding events or work conditions.
