Engaging In Emotional Labor
The management of the feelings and expressions is a part of emotional labor. If your job requires you to serve customers, clients, or the public, your employer is asking that you engage in what sociologists call emotional labor (Ferrante, Joan). “Emotional labor is an element of work activity in which the worker is required to display certain emotions in order to complete work tasks in the way required by an employe.” (Organizing and Managing Work, Tony J.Watson, 2002). According to Mastracci et al. (2011), to engage in emotional labor is not only simply to act with emotions at the forefront, but to recognize the way in which emotions influence outcomes in terms of service. “Emotional labor shares similarities as well as differences with physical …show more content…
According to wikipedia.org, emotional labor demands and display rules were viewed as a characteristic of particular occupations, such as restaurant workers, cashiers, hospital workers, bill collectors, counselors, secretaries, and nurses. Even if people fail at managing an emotion, their efforts are still influenced by social expectations — (Seeing Sociology: An Introduction). According to study.com, there are two specific types of emotional labor, and they are called deep acting and surface acting. Deep acting is about a person trying to feel a specific emotion that they are thinking about in their mind. Surface acting, however, is when a person has to fake emotion to meet certain social or work rules. Emotional labor is an indicator of how employees can handle adversity at work if they let their emotions hurt their work. As social beings, individuals display certain emotions irrespective of their emotions. Also a part of their occupation individuals perform emotional labor (Sushanta Kumar Mishra). As emotional labor is the process of managing feelings and expressions to fulfill the emotional requirement of a job, it is similar to many concepts like deception, impression management, and dramaturgy

    Although originally written in 1983, The Managed Heart is still an up to date look at an interesting concept: combining emotional feelings with the work one does. At first glance, the notion that emotions may have an impact on one’s work environment seems almost a non-issue. However, Hochschild is not saying that; rather, Hochschild looks at the effect of emotions in the workplace, but also the interaction of those emotions with the work itself. The author’s interest in this topic began at an early age, 12, when she recounts an event in her life: her parents, part of the U.S. Foreign Service, entertained diplomats. Hochschild describes the question that came to her mind as she looked up into the smiling face of a diplomat: was the smile real, or that of an actor, assuming a particular role expected of them in a specific situation? (ix) This puzzlement led the author from C. Wright Mills’ theory of how one sells their personality to Goffman’s theories of how one tries to control their appearance before others in an effort to observe rules as to how one should appear to others.     My experience with emotional labor is currently being a hospital corpsman in the US Navy. A hospital corpsman in the navy is pretty much a medical assistant in the civilian medical field. I used to work in an orthopedic clinic with all ages of patients. I dealt with screaming infants, young children who didn't listen to their parents, adolescents with attitude problems, and elders who cannot move and need assistance with everything. I had to go to work with a constant smile on my face, regardless how I was feeling, and help people. There was numerous occasions where I had migraines or was sick and had to 'forget' my own feelings to make sure that my patients were feeling comfortable. Emotional labor is needed to make patients feel welcome and to show them that they are receiving the best care possible.
