Enhanced My Character
Over the course of my seventeen years, I have definitely enhanced my character due to the society and people surrounding me. Many influencers have caused me to become a better and improved individual. I have developed an individual who is grateful and studious.
I was raised in a Catholic household, however I did not have a connection with my faith until I reached the age of fourteen. My religious community at St. Ann’s Catholic Parish has had a powerful impact on my character ever since I began to participate in religious activities.During my eight grade year, I joined a youth program that was offered to middle school students, during that time, I attended a retreat which completely altered my personality. I became closer to God and began

At the retreat, young adults discussed how God helped them through harsh times and how they found their path towards God. One story that stood out was about a young girl who was on the verge of committing suicide due to unhappiness and stress. She discussed how her younger sister suffered from a disease which caused her to be unable to walk or speak, but she always had a bright smile on her face, while the young girl had everything but was so unhappy. The young girl told us the only thing stopping her from killing herself was her younger sister, so in order to remove the suicide thoughts she looked for help in God. Her story reminded me of how lucky I am to have the life I live, because their so many other individuals struggling through life yet they are the happiest people, while I have everything yet I was constantly complaining. That day I learned an important lesson, happiness does not …show more content…
Coming from parents of immigrants, I have attempted to make them proud and achieve the future they were not able to obtain in their home country. At a young age, my parents informed me about the importance of education, they used to tell me about the lack of access to education found in Mexico and how it had a negative impact on their future. Sometimes teachers would not show up for days, other times students did not have a pencil and paper, and to some students school was too far and had no form of transportation, all of these factors caused students to drop out before reaching middle school level. My father being one of them, dropped out and worked at my grandparents farm until he earned enough money to move to the United States, at the age of sixteen he left home and traveled to an unfamiliar country. My mother, on the other hand, was able to achieve some high school education, however when she moved to the United States at the age of eighteen to follow her family in search of the American Dream, her dream of graduating was crushed. She arrived to the United States in hopes of being able to complete her high school career, but when she attempted to enroll in her nearest high school she was rejected for being over age, so she was never able to gain a high school diploma. My parents braveness to leave home for a better future has strongly encouraged be to focus on school and be the first in my family to earn a high

Born to immigrant parents in the United States has had its challenges. I was raised in a Greek household with Greek morals and ideals, which at often times clash with those of American culture. The outside world is perceived inversely when your inside world is conducted in a completely different manner. However, having been born to immigrant parents I have the ability to empathize with other cultures. This is a gift, which in this field I have often times used.…

They came to the U.S. in hopes of giving their children a better life, they put their all into their jobs until eventually they could bring my siblings to the United States for the better life every child deserves. Growing up in a neighborhood where you were automatically labeled a “screw-up” or a criminal has affected my peers and I in negative way. Many generations before mine have been discouraged to further their education, simply because of the marginalization of our ethnicity and the neighborhood where we have grown up. There is a disconnection between the language of my education and the language of my culture simply because in the schools my peers and I attend, we are not pushed enough to realize our full potential. Meanwhile at home, [most being hispanic] we are told that furthering our education is the most valuable thing we do have in life. In our hispanic families, we have a lot of support to follow our dreams and do whatever we need to in order to be successful, and although that is very helpful for many, it can only do so much. If we were pushed like this by the rest of the world and not treated as though we do not deserve to be successful, we would push to do our very best all the time.…

Let me start off with my mother's journey to America. It was 1985 when her parents decided it was time for a fresh start. It was very difficult to come to America legally, so they made their journey by traveling to other countries. They left Cuba and traveled to Spain where my grandfather found a job as a farmer. They lived in Spain for almost 2 years before they gathered enough resources to travel to Mexico. The journey from Mexico to the USA was very easy for them because they had a family member who knew their way around. They struggled for many years in America but soon became legal citizens. My mother later on went to college and completed her bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Miami. My grandparents purchased the…

I come from a family of immigrants who came here for a better living standard unfortunately, while growing up I witnessed money problems in the household. They had to work long hours and I struggled to focus on my own potential. My parents couldn’t spend much time with me and my siblings dealing with our own problems especially in school. As a result, I had a lack of confidence because I wasn’t at the same level as the rest of other kids and struggled doing well in school. I hate to say I didn’t have a strong role model because even though my father was around, he was always worried about other things and once in awhile he would spend time with me. I started not to take school seriously and become more rebellious and would always get complaints…
