Identify five examples that promote and protect individuals’ rights
An individual has at least 9 rights, these include:
1) To be respected – An individual will be disrespected if something about them isn’t appreciated or someone has gone against them. When an individual is giving a talk to a group of people, you can show respect for that individual by participating in the talk, answering questions when they are asked and listening to what they say
2) To be treated equally and not discriminated against – At Primary schools, it is a point for children to find themselves in the roles that they have. During periods where school plays occur, children with disabilities are often given small roles such as just joining in with the singing. If this happens by the time they are a lot older and attending secondary school, they may feel that way in general. That they don’t have their own say and may feel that they always join in and agree with other people. Giving a child with disabilities a main role or a speaking part in the play; will increase their self-esteem and confidence, they will have a say and it can prepare them for their future when doing presentations or giving talks to organisations.
3) Treated as an individual – People feel much better when they are looked at and treated as individuals rather than a whole. In care, this type of treatment is required towards service users to increase their self-esteem and make them feel valued.
4) Treated in a dignified way – residents seem to feel so much better in the care home when they are treated as humans although they may have disabilities that will make them feel different from everyone else, it isn’t right for care workers to make them feel any worse and should promote dignity. They should be respected, care workers would be patronizing or make them feel small if they do not treat them in dignified ways and this can lead to depression and the residents may shut down.
