Since he refused to tell his Home Council where he had been, he was thrown into the Palace of Corrective Detention. There he was tortured, but refused to tell where he had been, in fear of his invention being revealed. When the time came for the World Council to gather in his city, he broke out of the Palace of Corrective Detention and went to the World Council’s meeting. When he arrived, he was expecting to be praised and celebrated. However, when Equality 7-2521 arrived and told the World Council his story, they rejected him out of fear and anger. They threatened to kill him and to get rid of his lightbulb. In fear of the destruction of his lightbulb, he took his invention and left the city. He ran to the Uncharted Forest where he discovered that he was free at last to do as he pleased.
A while later, the Golden One appeared. She had followed Equality 7-2521 into the woods. They consented to live together in peace. After they had been wandering for several days in the mountains, they found an abandoned building from a time before theirs. They were mesmerized at the number of books and finery that they found in the building. Equality 7-2521 soon discovered the meaning of the word “I.” From there, he promised to protect his home and launch a new race of men and women who would believe in individualism and the forever
