Equality wanted to feel something other than the fear his society pushed onto him; he wanted to feel important and achieve something for himself, which is why he “wished to be sent to the Home of the Scholars when [his] time would come” (23). He wished to be in a place where questions were accepted and he could feel like he had some kind of significant role in the world. Of course, that is not what his society believed, for “the Teachers forbade it” (23). However, because Equality was not chosen to become a Scholar he found his own way to satisfy his curiosities.
