Equality 7-2521 Character Analysis
In a world where creativity, opinions, and new concepts are forbidden, Equality 7-2521 is born with a strong desire to know more. This is a great evil in such a world, and is looked down upon immensely. “We were born with a curse. It has always driven us to thoughts which are forbidden” (18). These thoughts in which are forbidden can also be identified as curiosity, and Equality 7-2521 is indeed a curious character. All his life he has been told that everything he does is for the benefit of mankind. “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, one, indivisible, and forever” (19). However, when Equality discovers a tunnel and his curious nature is sparked something drives him forward and he begins experimenting on various objects. This motivation is not to benefit the rest of society, but rather it is to satisfy his curious nature and strive for personal achievement. Being motivated in such a way is not a sin as Equality’s society would have you believe, for if all the world had this same determination for prominence, many new ideas and inventions would be presented to humanity, and the world would become a nobler place.

Equality wanted to feel something other than the fear his society pushed onto him; he wanted to feel important and achieve something for himself, which is why he “wished to be sent to the Home of the Scholars when [his] time would come” (23). He wished to be in a place where questions were accepted and he could feel like he had some kind of significant role in the world. Of course, that is not what his society believed, for “the Teachers forbade it” (23). However, because Equality was not chosen to become a Scholar he found his own way to satisfy his curiosities.
