Diversity is acknowledging that people can be different because of their culture, race, religion, sexual orientation, beliefs etc.
The definition of diversity can mean being aware that every person is unique not only because of their visible differences like race, age or disability, but also because of the differences that you can’t see like religion, social background, economic status, or political beliefs.
Equality is usually defined as treating everyone the same. But equality realy means treating everyone differently in order to gain equality. In childcare every child has the right to equality of opportunity; it means each child would be given the same chances as each other to achieve all aspects of learning..
Inclusion is the opposite of discrimination and it means to be fully included, to make people feel respected and valued no matter what their ethnicity, gender, disability, medical or other need, culture, age, religion and sexual orientation. It is about giving equal opportunities and equal access, breaking down barriers and getting rid of discrimination and intolerance.
Society is made of people with a wide range of characteristics and backgrounds. This diversity contributes strength to a community but sadly it’s often perceived as a problem. The children I will be working with will all have different social and cultural backgrounds and live with families which have a wide range of lifestyles. Each child as an individual will enable to promote the right to have access to equality of opportunity and will be treated with equal concern so they are able to progress and develop and learn.
