Equality in a care home
I have done my presentation on equality diversity and rights I have chosen to do my presentation on a care home setting. I will be looking at the different aspects of care that is available at the care home and the possible barriers of care that may or may not be over come. I will also be looking at acts that are in place to protect the service user against abuse. I will also look closely at the safety measures they have in place to care for the service user and make sure that the service user is happy and is being cared for according to the care value base.
There are 3 ways that people can refer to care these are: self referral - when the patient itself brings their self's forward for care third party referrals - this is when friends or family one someone else brings the patient forward to care as they may this he or she may be incapable of looking after their selves. There will be an assessment of the patient to see whether they are in need of help with the care of their selves. If they don't want to go into care then things to consider will be their human rights (1998) and also other peoples human rights, so they have to either be a danger to their selves or the public (PUBLIC SAFETY ACT, 2002)
Professional referral- when a doctor or someone who is an expert in the line of work refers patients in to care for a variety of reasons, i.e. Dementia. Practice should be regulated by the ethics in patient referrals act of 1989.
Effective communication - this is important in making sure the service user is happy also taking in to account their opinions and letting them express their selves by verbal and non verbal communication, also to make sure that someone is there to listen to the service users issues. There might be some service users who might not feel comfortable talking so maybe there could suggestion boxes around the care home and also meeting with the service users every few weeks to see whether they are satisfied and to see if they have any thoughts

1.1 Within my care setting the service users all have a disability, some more severe than others, because of this they are classed as vulnerable adults whom are not always aware of how to take care of themselves. It is my responsibility to carry out a duty of care towards them such as, ensuring that they have their medication administered, ensuring that their personal hygiene is maintained and encouraged and to also ensure that any activities they wish to carry out are suitable and beneficial to them. A duty of care is a legal obligation in which I adhere to a standard of care. Within my care setting we have various procedures and checks we must carry out to ensure that we are providing a high standard of care to the service users. Such as, medication charts to be completed once the medication has been administered. Fire safety and health and safety checks are carried out on a weekly basis. Daily cleaning is carried out to ensure the setting is clean, which also prevents the spread of infection.…

All care workers involved with a service user must be aware of what care is needed for that person and know and understand in order to co-ordinate care efficiently. This can be done by liaising with all parties involved in providing care for the individual, eg the service users themselves this will encourage and support them to be involved in their own care, helping them maintain their skills etc. social worker, family, home care agency, meals on wheels, district nurses, GP. There is no point in a GP stating dressing needs to be changed daily and district nurses go in weekly, or the district nurses go for visit at home and the person is not there because on the day they visit they are at day care. A person may have meals on wheels every day, but then gets a place within day care for 2 days per week, meals on wheels would then need to be informed that meals will not be needed on those days, also when day care is closed for bank holidays meals on wheels would be put back in place for those days, or if home care lunch calls are normally supplied, those would be put in place, this also happens if a person does not attend day care if unwell. All these things need to be sorted out before a person attends the centre, and as much information retained as possible regarding there care. Each day we have an end of day discussion so…

I have learnt to be tolerant and to understand other people’s cultures, to respect beliefs and values of other people. This excited me, and I felt I wanted to find out how much I had learnt from this module and what to apply to my placement. I wanted to find out if the patients had individual rights at these homes. I was keen on observing how the staff cared for the aged, and to see if the standard set by the Care Homes Regulatory Office were being met. I was surprised to find that the department of health has stipulated the National Minimum Standard for the Care homes for Older People. I also felt apprehensive about being excluded by the carers, on the groups of respecting the patient’s private needs, if any. Nevertheless I was also concerned about the new environment of working in hand with the carers who understood what was expected from them. This was a challenge for me I then confirmed my…
