What does it mean to be a revolutionary? A revolutionary is person who actively participates, or advocates revolution. Ernestno Che Guevara is an individuals who solely demonstrates the example of a true revolutionary. To some people Ernesto Guevara is an idolized man of the people, a freedom fighter for the downtrodden, who gave his life in the struggle to free people of the world to live in a “better” society; and to other he was seemed to be a killer who was willing to die to be a martyr for his cause. Che Guevara born in June 14, 1928 in Rosario Argentina. Che was described as a very dynamic and radical boy who enjoyed readings by Marx, Freud, and Engles. During this time Argentina has just gain their independence from Spain which was supposed to give the people a voice in their country, which was not the case. In 1951, Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado began a journey traveling north commonly known as “the motorcycle diaries”; traveling to Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela. Then later returning back to Argentina after parting ways with Granado. After finishing medical school in 1953 Guevara set out on yet another journey experiencing many countries, then settling in Guatemala. While in Guatemala he spent time working in land reform under President Jacobo Arbenz. Here, Ernesto got the nickname “Che” and expression meaning “hey there”. In the process of the CIA overthrowing President Jacobo, Che' tried to join and brigade and fight, which lead him to taking refuge in the Argentine Embassy then safely escaping to Mexico. During Che's voyage to Mexico, where he Raul Castro sought refuge after being jailed, pardoned, and exiled from Cuba. Che learned that Raul was the leader in the assault on the Moncada Barracks in Cuba in 1953. Soon after Che' was introduced to Raul's brother, Fidel Castro who was the leader of the 26th of July movement which was set forth to remove the Cuban Dictator Fulgencio Batista from power. Throughout the events Che' was intrigued in finding a way to strike against the Imperialism of the United States.
Che' and Fidel became and unstoppable match-up along with the help of Camilo Cienfuegos. In 1956 Castro, Guevara, and 80 other guerrillas departed from Tuxpan, Veracruz aboard the cabin cruiser Granma on November 25. 1967. Ernesto "Che" Guevara has undeniably been one of the most powerful icons of the past forty years. The Argentine revolutionary has had his picture widely printed on shirts and posters and has become a symbol for the anarchist. Yet, how many of us really understand or know what "Che" stood for? Do we know what his philosophy was about? Very few of us have taken the time to understand the goals and principles of Guevara and what he fought for to death, but I have taken the time to clearly understand the fight he fought. In Parallel another influential revolutionary was Leila Khaled, growing up without a father and being raised by her older brother and mother, Ms. Khaled was no stranger to violence. At the age of fifteen she followed in her brothers footsteps and joined the Arab National Movement. She was a strong-minded, willing freedom fighter who solemnly fought for the freedom of her people. Even though Guevara was a prominent fighter, it was striking that a female was bringing attention to her country by taking such harsh measure such as hijacking airplanes. I commend her for taking this stand for herself and others, as well empowering both women and men to fight for their freedom and what they believe in. A true Freedom Fighter.
