Near Riviera Maya, a stretch of Caribbean coastline, sites such as Cobá and Muyil have been discovered. Tulum, another ancient city of the Mayans, remains standing and is a popular tourist attraction. Polé has transformed from a small Mayan city into Xcaret, which has tours, interactive activities, as well as mouth-watering restaurants along the sea. Finally, Chichén Itzá in the bordering Mexican state of Yucatán is a large, Mayan city that has had a long-lasting mark in the Mayan civilization.
Several centuries after the Mayans inhabited Cancún, the Mexican government took its chances on an unknown area: it financed the first nine hotels, the first being the Hyatt Cancún Caribe. From its vague origins, the city developed from what was first a tourism and financial project to a successful, bustling location, receiving the Best of the Best award “for excellence and good governance” from The World Tourism Organization
