Essay On Assisted Living
I will make a positive difference in the lives of seniors in assisted living facilities in my town by providing an exercise plan that incorporates therapeutic modalities to improve daily functionality. During my junior year of high school, I enrolled in an off-campus Sports Medicine Technologies program. In the first year, the curriculum was based on learning gross anatomy and foundations of exercise, and determining what medical field would be the best fit. In my senior year, my classmates and I participated in unpaid internships to areas related to our future career. I had the opportunity of job shadowing physical therapists at a local clinic and at the assisted living facility. In addition to my school opportunities, I volunteered at the local hospital in the physical therapy department. In this position, I communicated with patients and helped with their transportation. A large majority of the patients who encountered physical therapy at the clinic were part of an …show more content…
While increasing longevity is an amazing accomplishment, unfortunately many older adults are faced with a greater risk of falls and injuries that may leave them hospitalized. Careers like physical therapy are vital in ensuring that those seniors receive the proper treatment needed to continue daily activities, and also restores a sense of independence that a patient may have lost. I did not see the people living in assisted living facilities as just patients. They are war heroes, parents, grandparents, business owners, and inspiring individuals. Every individual I worked with shared a reason for them to continue improving their daily lives through physical therapy. Whether their inspiration was from wanting to keep up with their grandchildren, or being able to do an enjoyable activity, these individuals were determined to step out of their comfort zone while being in the safety of a physical therapist’s

Those in the healthcare profession are respected, hardworking individuals who went above and beyond to prove themselves capable of helping others in the greatest way possible. My career goals are very straightforward. I’ve taken several steps in high school to accomplish these goals by being well disciplined in my studies, and participating in a Health Careers Internship Program. This program offers me a variety of opportunities that make me a more applicable in a healthcare setting. I’ve learned how to build a strong résumé and cover letter, and how do professional interviews well. We also get the chance to observe and participate in a medical environment. I’ll be shadowing with Dr. Steve Carr at Northern Star Therapy and learn the basics of physical therapy. I’ve done also done volunteer work in a Geriatric setting, at the St. Benedict nursing home in St. Cloud. My plans following high school are to attend the University of Minnesota in the College of Biological Sciences. The most often reported incident in long-term care facilities is falls. Three out of four residents will fall each year and many result in a lawsuit. The most common reason for falls is existing health conditions affecting muscle weakness or trouble walking (Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 2009). Even though falls are unavoidable in a long-term care setting, risks can be cut-down with fall prevention strategies as well as staff education, decreasing risk factors like low lighting, wet floors, and inadequately fitted wheelchairs, and bringing together exercise programs to strengthen muscles and increase balance. Most essential, everyone working inside the facility from nursing to maintenance staff must be involved in fall prevention (Rhodes,…

As a carer your role is not to do things “for” the individuals you care for but to do things “with” them. Your role is to work in partnership with the individual and support their decisions, regarding their care and support them to do as much as possible for themselves. If you provide too much care for an individual they can lose skills, not learn new skills and do not regain skills they have lost. By providing active support and encouraging the individual to participate in their daily living needs you are helping them to develop and maintain their skills for everyday life. Individuals may have an evaluation to assess their physical skills. This may be carried out by an occupational therapist who will assess how well an individual can function in daily life and participate in their environment. The OT will assess what equipment and adaptations are appropriate which might assist an individual to remain as independent as possible. Occupational therapy has been shown to be successful for the elderly population with many medical conditions and surgical recoveries. Therapists work with individuals to improve their strength and regain or maintain necessary life skills. Occupational therapists working with the geriatric community counsel families, groups in the community and local governments, to make sure that each sector is doing its part to help the elderly to maintain their independence. Occupational therapy also helps geriatric clients and patients with other activities to assist in diminishing the possibility of social isolation and its unpleasant side effects. They do this by helping elderly clients and patients continue social activities they know and encouraging them to get involved in new ones as well as showing these folks ways to continue to learn in spite their limitations. Occupational therapy also promotes mind stimulating activities. These mental gymnastics give the seniors feelings of self-worth and may help them avoid getting dementia. Encouraging…

In 2000, the APTA House of Delegates adopted Vision 2020. It’s primarily a vision of where the profession of physical therapy sees itself 17 years from now. This vision has brought members together, put focus onto the more important issues, and acclaimed physical therapy between its workers. The vision 2020 distinctively states that by 2020 physical therapy will be maintained by physical therapists who are doctors of physical therapy and who may be board-certified specialists. Patients will have convenient admittance to physical therapists in all environments for their administration, prevention, and health services. Also physical therapists may be assisted by PTA’s who certified in their field to assist the PT during activities. It was determined at a retreat in the fall of 2000 that to achieve the Vision goal of being an autonomous profession, few fundamental areas needed focus.…

To be honest, lack of education or knowledge about dementia is one of the greatest challenges that the health care system faces. It would be hard to provide the best care for the people with the disease. Not only does it affect the caregivers' performance, but it would raise an ethical issue. From the article, "Care for Residents with Dementia in an Assisted Living Facility," although there were no reports of clients being abused, this is an issue that all caregivers should be aware of (Sharpp, T. J., Kayser-Jones, J. S., & Young, H. M., 2012). Providing care to the clients with the disease can put a lot of stress on the caregivers; therefore, it's important to understand the policy and follow it. Perhaps enforcing the caregivers…

Through my experience shadowing physical therapists I have been able to see the true beauty of rehabilitating the human body and easing pain through movement. I know these accomplishments can be explained through science, but the body’s amazing ability to heal, along with the intricacy of the brain and its communication with the rest of the body have always seemed miraculous to me. I say that movement is a “simple” act, but when you get down to the basic science, it is absolutely incredible to see how much effort and design goes into each ‘simple’ motion. It could be argued that movement can enable the human body to heal and to grow more than many other forms of treatment. Movement is something that can not only enable a person to fully enjoy all that life has to offer, but it can also enable them to be a more healthy and active player in their own life. As a physical therapist, I hope that I will be able to better the lives of those around me, even in small ways. In my work, I will strive to inspire those who are hopeless, and to cheer on those who are making progress. I want to be an encourager, an advocate, and most importantly, I want to instill confidence in my patients. Whether it be to relieve a patient of chronic pain, or rehabilitate someone back to walking or playing their favorite sport, each milestone can be seen as a huge accomplishment. The human experience is one in which we all share, and when one person reaches their potential, society as a whole is improved. I believe that physical therapists can allow everyone to reach the point where they are able to take movement for granted, and I hope to one day be a part of giving that gift to…
