Working as a support worker for young adults, among other responsibilities, solely requires maintenance of a safe environment for the young adults to be cared for, while promoting wellbeing. Maintaining a safe environment involves a series of inter-twined activities which include monitoring and reporting the activities of the individuals in care on a day-to-day base. Considering that the activities are carried out by multiple individuals in different placements within the United Kingdom, with different attitudes and operation patterns, the need for regulation to foster uniformity and consistency within all organisations has not been ignored. The National Occupational Standard covers all fields of job roles at diverse levels of responsibility, identifying and expressing the most appropriate and generally acceptable practice in specific fields, bringing…

Planning: As a teaching assistant, I assist the teacher in planning for lessons by first having an informal discussion with the teacher in order to determine what the learning objectives are for the upcoming topics, so both I and the teacher know what the learning outcomes are and what is expected of the children. If I sometimes miss work the teacher sometimes emails me with a breakdown of lesson plans for the week so I can prepare for it and so I know what has been covered in the days I was absent. During this discussion I am able to put forth my ideas on how best I think the topic should be delivered and what groups of children I should sit next to provide additional support as they may struggle the most. Discussing and planning the activities beforehand gives me an idea of what needs to be done before the lesson and during the lesson. By doing this it helps me be in control of my group as I know what needs to be done.…

These methods of motivation and feedback will hopefully coerce the learners to make the initial effort to attempt the task set. Once the effort has been made my role will then include offering support with performance. Giving regular updates on how they are performing is key for keeping them on task and engaged. Feedback such as “how you getting on” and “do you need anything” shows you are interested and may encourage learners to ask questions if they are unsure. Any feedback on work will be constructive and supportive, for example if a learner has made a mistake I will say “don’t worry, this has happened, look try it this way” or “ good effort but can you have a go this way”. If they have completed the task well then I will praise them, “well done” and “great work” are common phrases. As the lesson comes to a close I will give feedback on what they have achieved, the outcome. I will ask open questions in order to encourage a response from them “how do you think it went” and “what do you feel you done well” will give the learner an opportunity to take pride in their work and identify their own successes and not the ones that I have witnessed. Hopefully through these questions the learner will have identified what they have done well and give me the opportunity to re-enforce what their personal goal is “well done, that brings you closer to completing the module” or if it’s on a more personal level I will congratulate the learner completing the lesson without disruption or poor…

CQC report (2012) outlined that in order to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of service users, there must at all times be sufficient staff levels for the purposes of carrying out regulated activities. Music and drama: in health and social care we have various individuals who have various needs in terms of providing services for them. However, service providers use music and drama in order for clients to be able to express themselves. The force of music, particularly singing help dementia clients to be able to communicate because they use it as a point expressing themselves. For example, in Stone End Day Centre where I did my placement, the staff used music and drama to be able to communicate with clients who have dementia. This has helped them to be able to communicate with the clients because the clients can easily express themselves by using music and drama. In addition to this, music and drama is used in the context of either 1-1 or group. The 1-1 could be between a staff and a client or the group will be between some staff and some group of clients who are particularly suffering from dementia. In the day centre where I did my placement, the staff used music and drama for a particular group of individuals who have dementia or who cannot express their self through speaking words. The staff used music and drama so that those group of clients can communicate and express themselves. However, in the event that a particular client have severe dementia the staff will…

In placement I am aware of the planning in the class for the week as it is displayed up on the wall at the start of each week. This means I can look each morning to find out what is happening over the day so therefore I will no what needs doing in the classroom to prepare. If the children were doing a painting activity, my role would be to set up the table, cover it in news paper, get out the paints and paintbrushes and set out the paper. For health and safety reasons the paint is non toxic. Children are encouraged to take part by using positive language they are praised whilst doing their activity and positive facial expressions and body language are…
