A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer could also be called Ultrasound Technicians.
According to Makely, Badasch, & Chesebro (2014), “They use diagnostic ultrasound to transmit sound waves at high frequencies into the patient’s body. Images are seen on a screen and also records on a strip of video” (p. 39). Many people relate Sonographers with pregnancies, because it is how a fetus can be seen during pregnancy. Being able to show a mother their unborn baby is such a breath taking experience. Medical sonographers work in clinics, hospitals or in a OBGYN office. Sonographers most of the time work on weekdays but must stay available to come in to work. To become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, you need to have a high school diploma or equivalent, graduate from an accredited sonography program, have passed the ARDMS which is the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The Annual Salary is from $53,300-63,600 (p.76). Although this is my dream career it also has its disadvantages like for example not being able to get into the sonography program due to it being a limited access program. Medical Sonographers deal with lots of emotions, and I’m not so sure I have the heart to tell a soon to be mother, that I hear no heartbeat, or that something is wrong with their
baby. Becoming a Psychiatric Technician would be my alternative career because it deals with helping other people. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor of Statistics a Psychiatric Technician is “Care for individuals with mental or emotional conditions or disabilities, following the instructions of physicians or other health practitioners. Monitor patients' physical and emotional well-being and report to medical staff. May participate in rehabilitation and treatment programs, help with personal hygiene, and administer oral or injectable medications”. In this career I am able to help others better themselves in any way possible. Psychiatric technicians mostly work on their feet, and most of the time deal with patients that are violent, disoriented, and uncooperative. According to the U.S Bureau of Statistics “psychiatric technicians and aides have high injury and illness rates”. Due to many demanding task while working for example lifting and carrying a patient. Usually psychiatric technician usually has experience as a nurse or as a licensed practical nurse. Must have a high school diploma. The Interest Assessment suited me best for this career since I had the highest score in Social, score of 33. Social people are helpers. We rather work directly with other people and enjoy helping others. I am also an Investigator, investigators tend to analyze and solve problems, which is a key to understanding what is wrong with a patient. The annual wage for this career is from 20,660-26,850. Psychiatric technicians work nights, weekdays and holidays. I agree with both of my inventory results but I strongly believe becoming a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is the right career path for me because it is something I am passionate about and is a career that describes who I am.
