Military Family Narrative
From the moment I was born, I was enlisted, figuratively, into the military. My father had been serving in the army for twelve years at that point in time. Throughout the first fourteen years of my life, I experienced all the processes military families were required to endure. Such as, moving every three years, being without a parent during annual training, and isolation from extended family. I was born in Fort Riley, Kansas in 1998. For the three years my family lived there, my father lived with us for one year, if you add up the amount of times he had to leave. During the transition to the next state, most families would move together and live in a hotel, however, my father left to find a home and let us stay in Kansas. The next state we lived in was Oregon. After moving to Oregon, the amount of effect the military had on my family decreased. We lived in two different cities within the six years in Oregon. Lastly, we were transferred to Des Moines, Iowa. During these fourteen years, I experienced new cities and new people. This was one of the many rare perks of being in a military family. Amazing Grace, by Jonathan Kozol, is about the author’s interviews with, and thoughts about, some of the poorest people who live in the poorest sections of New York. The facts stated in Amazing Grace startled me with the prevalence and desperation of the poverty situation in areas like the South Bronx and Mott Haven. These are areas where there are hundreds of thousands of people living in broken, crowded, and rundown apartment buildings, “That,” says Kozol, “most people would not even kennel their dogs in.” (pg. 51) I have been to areas near my home that I thought were poverty stricken, but they pale in comparison to some of the situations that I read about in Amazing Grace. On the very first page I was surprised by the fact that, “In 1991, the median household income of the area, according to the New…

Ashanti once said, "I have a tremendous amount of respect for military families. To have to worry about your loved ones and still try and live a normal life is extremely hard." For most military families it is hard to maintain a normal life with the constant worry about a loved one in the military on your mind. This worrying causes a great deal of stress and puts enormous strains on military families. Statistics show that Students with deployed parents experience significantly higher rates of behavioral issues than their peers. Military children also tend to experience increased school movement, which decreases achievement and increases the drop-out risk. (Rossen 1) The strain put on military families is very intense,…

Brat's hardships and stresses are the constant change and the friendships they leave behind. My army career was right on track. I had been in the 3 years at this point, coming up on 4, and already had completed air assault school, been awarded my expert infantry badge, and had one 15 month deployment under my belt. I was assigned to the scout platoon sniper section and was waiting for a sniper school packet to get final approval from the company commander. I had been studying for the sergeant promotion board for months. I knew that study guide like the back of my hand, I knew whatever question I was asked by the Command Sergeant Major I would have an answer for. I went to the promotion board that morning and blew it out of the water. My dress uniform was perfect. No one was able to find a single deficiency. The Soldiers Creed and the…

Besides seeing the country, the most important thing I gained from being in a military family was meeting people from all walks of life. Living in Southern California helped expose me to new cultures that I hadn’t experienced before, and going to school that was mostly comprised of Mexican-Americans allowed me to transcend any racial barriers at young age. It was at this small Catholic school that I met my closest friends and created my fondest memories during my childhood. The lifelong friends that my parents met are a still apart of my life, and I hope to be connected with their families in another fifty…
