The media has a right to freedom of expression, as stated in Article 19 of the 1st Amendment.
Although I don’t follow media magazines or tabloids such as TMZ, I believe the freedom of expression should be defended, and that celebrities do not have a right to privacy in the public space. All US citizens have a right to privacy in their own homes and property. This law also applies to celebrities. In 2007, Brittney Spears’ mental breakdown received a vast amount of attention by the media and tabloids. She had her head shaven, got new tattoos, and attacked a paparazzi car with an umbrella. This outrageous behavior by her made headlines of The Enquirer, her behavior was witnessed in public.
Being famous may come with many benefits, such as: wealth, high social status, beautiful cars and homes. One setback, though, is the stress of paparazzi chasing you. When the topic of paparazzi bombardment comes up, often Princess Diana and her death are mentioned. She died on August 31, 1997; during a high speed car crash trying to allegedly get away from the paparazzi. The media put the blame on the paparazzi when this tragic event happened, and people thought even less of the paparazzi. However, an 18 month long investigation by the
French jurisdiction revealed that the driver of the Mercedes that Diana was in, Henri Paul, was under the influence of alcohol. Along with the alcohol, traces of Antidepressants and
Antipsychotics were found in his body. As a result of this investigation, it was concluded Henri
Paul caused the car to crash. Also, the paparazzi were not near the Mercedes when it crashed.
