Essay On Child Observation

I took a group of four children to do a painting activity with me at the table. I then went on to ask each child what they would like to paint. All the children suggested they wanted to paint a castle, apart from child C who wanted to paint a picture of his family. I then asked each child what colour paper they would like to paint on and they all shouted “Blue” at me. I asked each child to pick the sizes of the paint brush they would like to paint with, as I went around all the children took a large paint brush and left me with four small brushes. Child C was very upset because there were no more large paint brushes and he does not like to use a small paint brush, as he finds it easier to paint with the larger brushes only, when he is painting
He walks quickly out of the cloakroom and into the nursery outdoor play area. In the nursery the pre-school class children have their own outdoor play area so they can use larger objects safely. Child C has a very confident and upright posture and moves quickly. I then asked him what he would like to play on outside and he looked towards the climbing frame and sees that there is no one there, as he wanted to play there. He then began to run quickly and lightly on his toes. He laughs as he runs and seems to be very excited. His movements are well coordinated. He swerves easily to avoid another child who is running towards him. Child C seems to enjoy moving very quickly. He reaches the climbing frame and stops moving. He shows good control a he stops suddenly. He then looked at the climbing frame and starts to climb the bars, placing one foot on each step. There is no other member of staff near the climbing frame. So I moved nearer to supervise him climbing in case of an accident. Child C smiles at me as he reaches the top and easily climbs over the rail on to the slide. As he lets go off the sides he laughs as he slides down. At the bottom he jumps off the slide and runs around to climb up again. He repeated this several of times.
