The United States of America uses the Electoral College voting mechanism created by the constitution, in order to elect the president and vice president. The purpose of the Electoral College is to give all states an equal vote, no matter how small or big the state is. The system is not flawless, although it has many positives. Some people feel the system is a fail, while others feel it is efficient for the American government.
The Electoral College is a system made up of 538 electors. Each state is given a certain amount of electors based on the state's total sum of senators and representatives. This system was developed for two main reasons, the first was to create a buffer between population and the election of a president, and the second was to give extra power to smaller states. The founders didn’t trust the population to make the correct choice in a direct election. This being the reason we have electors, which are men or women believed to insure only a qualified person can take office.
Even though the Electoral College has shown on three elections to not match the popular vote, a way to prevent this would be to get rid of the “winner-takes-all” policy. This would make it possible for candidates to win different sections of states. With the Electoral College the way it is now, a candidate can win all the votes of one state, even if not all parts of the state give a majority vote to that candidate. This would make it so the votes matched the popular vote, making it a more democratic system, while still reaching the same ultimate goals.
The Electoral college, with some disadvantages, has many valuable advantages that make and keep it our best voting system for our presidential elections. As Ronald Reagan said, “man is not free, unless the government is limited.” With a few adjustments it could it be made more effective and more democratic, that way the people always get the representation they vote
