Do You Have A Growth or A Fixed Mindset?
According to Dweck’s research, “Intelligence is something that can be cultivated through effort and education” (1). Carol S. Dweck Professor of Psychology at Stanford University studies about different mindsets in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. She studies two different mindsets one called fixed, and the other called the growth. She also discusses how parents praising their children can be traumatic. Through her research, she found those with fixed mindsets impacted students negatively, while growth mindsets affect students more positively. I have a growth and fixed mindset.
I have a tendency to lose my ambition, especially when my parents become more restrictive or when tests and homework get more difficult. According to Dweck’s study, “Children praised for their intelligence lost their confidence as soon as the problems got more difficult” (Dweck, 2). Some students don’t see that they are unique, so it takes personal growth and maturity to achieve their objectives. One’s failures,flaws, and imperfections are what makes one special. I’ve met knowledgeable people who have failed frequently in the same subject or test. However, I’ve also met those who have transformed by their learning experiences and eventually became successful. With this thought in mind, no one has a perfectly mixed mindset nor growth mindset. Personally, I believe that tests, projects, and homework, don’t define one’s intelligence. In my experience, Intelligence is the student’s motivation, determination, and the will to persevere even when times become difficult.
