What can we say about genetic engineering? Most of us fear for the worse and do not know how it works, while others think it will make our future brighter . With the way genetic engineering is changing, people could look out their window in future years and see woolly mammoths roaming freely. Genetic engineering is a process that is performed to add DNA to an animal, human,or plant. The reason being to give an organism attributes and characteristics that it does not already have (Higley). Genetic engineering should only be used for the treatment of serious diseases. It should never be used to alter or improve animals. Researchers want to create animals that are missing genes that all normal animals have. This requires …show more content…
According to West C. Economic and ethics in the genetic engineering of animals. Harvard J Law Technol., "The primary application of genetic engineering to wild species involves cloning. This technology could be applied to either extinct or endangered species; for example, there have been plans to clone the extinct thylacine and the woolly mammoth.”(West C. Economic and ethics in the genetic engineering of animals. Harvard J Law Technol.) Cloning extinct animals will change the world as we see it today. If these animals are brought back to life, humans need to realize that life will be different with huge creatures roaming the earth. This technique should be done only to the extent to save endangered animals so they do not go extinct. However many fear this will get out of hand and researches will misuse the technology. Most importantly, even if extinct species were brought back to life, where would they live? That environment is far gone as well. Many problems also result with cloning. As stated by the Genetic Science Learning Center, “Cloned animals that do survive tend to be much bigger at birth than their natural counterparts.(...)This can lead to breathing, blood flow and other problems.”(Genetic Science Learning center) This is important because cloning is causing more bad results, than it is good. Animals are being cloned against their will for the pleasure of humans. People need to become aware of these
