Juicing came back in style in 2010, and it hasn’t left since, but to be completely prepared for a lifetime of successful juicing, there a few things you need to know about. One thing is for sure: once you understand the full benefits of juicing, you won't want to go without!
The history of juicing
Juicing is way older than you probably think. The first documented evidence of humans 'juicing' for health benefits go back to 150 B.C - and since then, many cultures have used fruits, vegetables, herbs, and plants to make all kinds of juices.
But juicing as we know it today got popular in 2010 when multiple newspapers reported the success of multiple juice retreat programs. Clients of these programs reported lower blood pressure, reversal of type 2 diabetes and more. Also in that year, the popular …show more content…
documentary Fat, Sick And Nearly Dead came out. In the documentary, Joe Cross loses over a 100 pounds following a juice fast diet. Cross has since gone on to become a motivational speaker and an advocate for juicing. After the initial release, many retailers saw an increase in the sale of juicers.
The benefits of juicing
Whether you juice because you want to lose weight or simply because you value healthy habits: there are benefits for everyone. The National Cancer institute recommends eating five servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables each day, something that’s tough for a lot of us.
While juicing isn’t necessarily healthier than eating whole fruits and vegetables, for many people it is easier to get their recommended servings in the form of a juice.
When juicing your fruits and vegetables, you also remove the insoluble fiber from the ingredients. While fiber is important in any diet, removing insoluble fiber allows for increased absorption of specific phytonutrients, like important enzymes.
The benefits of juice cleanses
Juice cleanses have become increasingly popular over the last few years, and for good reason! Juice cleanses are a great way to instantly detoxify your body and jump-start a new healthy lifestyle. This ‘detox’ diet can last either a few days or a few weeks and is known to reduce bloating and increase weight loss.
“If while you do the cleanse, you really focus on it and use it as a pathway, you’ll find you’re naturally craving [healthier food] after,” Kenynon Farley said. She is the founder of Ritual Wellness, a company that offers cold-pressed organic juices. Juicing doesn’t only offer physical benefits: it also offers emotional benefits.
Okay, what
now?
You might have gotten enthusiastic and want to do a 45-day juice cleanse right away. Don’t worry, we get it! But it’s way more sustainable to do a short juice cleanse first, or to slowly incorporate juices into your lifestyle. Especially because juice-only cleanses aren’t a good fit for everyone.
Incorporating juicing in your daily life
When you first get started with juicing, we recommend that you either visit your local juice bar or buy a cheaper model, just to see if it’s something for you. Either drink 100% vegetable juice or add some low-sugar fruits to your juice, such as green apples, lime, berries, and grapefruit. Since juicing extracts the insoluble fiber, the natural fruit sugars will be absorbed by your body much more quickly, causing your blood sugar level to spike.
Many people like drinking juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This doesn’t only help to awaken the digestive system, but it will also help to reduce your overall caffeine intake. If the morning doesn’t work for your schedule, find a time that’s right for you. We’re all different and the most important thing is that you’re able to incorporate juices in a way that works for you.
Can I drink pre-bottled juices?
Yes, you can. However, it is important to note that pre-bottled juice isn’t the same fresh juice. It sits, oxidizes and loses nutrients. Not to mention how expensive they can be! If you want the best bang for your buck, just juice at home! If that’s not possible and pre-bottled juice is your only option, go for something that is 100% juice so you skip the added sugar.
Juice is very alkalizing and detoxifying, most people will get the health benefits doing it even two or three times a week. We recommend - especially in the beginning - to add juice to your existing diet, rather than to replace a meal. This makes it much more sustainable and helps prevent any of the ‘detox’ symptoms, like headaches and body aches.
We hope we have inspired you to get started on your own journey of juicing. Always remember that the ultimate goal is to feel healthy inside and out and that you should always do whatever feels good for you. Happy juicing!
