the veteran to understand the benefits of good nutrition.
Minerals are very important to your body's health. Your body will use minerals for a variety of different functions; building bones, manufacturing hormones and even keeping your heart rate steady.
There are two separate categories of minerals
· Macro Minerals
· Trace Minerals
Your body requires larger amounts of Macro Minerals than it does of Trace Minerals.
Examples of Macro Minerals include calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, magnesium sulfur and chloride.
Some examples of Trace Minerals would be iron, copper, zinc, cobalt, selenium, fluoride, iodine and manganese.
The most favorable way to get the correct balance of minerals your body requires is through a proper diet. Some minerals, however, may require supplementation to maintain the proper balance. Consult with your doctor for proper mineral balance and general nutritional guidance.
One of the best sources of information on nutrition and mineral balance is available on the VA Website, MyHealtheVet. The web address is, http://www.myhealth.va.gov
There Veterans will find information on general nutrition and charts that will help them to understand the benefits of minerals, what foods provide them, and how they affect the body.
For example, Calcium plays an important role in the formation of bones and teeth, helps with blood clotting, and aids in muscle and nerve function. Calcium can be found in milk, cheese, yogurt, salmon, sardines, kale and broccoli. Too much calcium can lead to kidney stones, calcium deposits, and decreased absorption of iron, zinc and magnesium.
The above referenced example and much more information on minerals are found on the VA website,

I am a retired banker who served in the military during the Vietnam era. I am the author of books on mortgage lending and maintain blogs about Military Veterans Health. I work with a group of Vietnam veterans who are dedicated to helping educate other military veterans about the benefits of maintaining good health through proper nutrition. I became afflicted with Hepatitis-C during my military service. This is a terrible disease which eventually leads to cirrhosis or cancer of the liver and death. As the disease progresses it leads to other conditions such as Thyroid disease and Type II Diabetes, both of which I have. The traditional medical protocols have proven to be ineffective in treating my condition. The other veterans in our group are in similar situation. We have all had success at preventing the advancement of our disease through proper diet and nutrition. Our goal is to help educate our military veterans about ways they can reduce their overall dependency on pharmaceuticals by maintaining proper diet
