Minimizing school shootings with gun control
The United States has seen an increase in school shootings in the past couple of years. Such a dramatic increase that it seems like a trend know. So far this year there has been a reported 52 school shootings. There have been about 142 school shootings since the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012. This is a large number when compared to past years. Implementing gun control will help minimize school shootings.
People who oppose gun control think that regulating guns would not be the answer to minimizing school shootings. This is not true because someone with a knife can be stopped much faster than someone with a gun. A knife can’t be compared to a semiautomatic weapon that can instantly kill a large quantity of people. They also argue that mental health issues are a problem in people who engage in school shootings, and nothing can be done to prevent metal health disorders. This is a factor that will be taken into consideration when creating a gun control plan. Adam Lanza was 20 at the time he went into Sandy Hook Elementary killing 27 and injuring 2. His behavioral records show that he was suffering from sensory integration disorder at the age of 5. Meaning he wasn’t integrating himself with society as well as others do at his age. By the time he was 13 he was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome and obsessive compulsive disorder. He was also very fascinated by guns. If gun control had been implemented at the time this tragedy would have been preventable.
