1. List and describe 3 materials you would make available in your classroom to promote multiculturalism Puzzles of various cultures from the classroom should be placed out on shelves to help the children identify and feel welcomed in the classroom. Another material to have in a classroom would be multicultural dolls. The baby dolls should be of various ethnicities or different cultures. The dolls would be a representation of various differences in features that children may question. The last material to mention would be posters or pictures hanging throughout the classroom. These posters would display various cultures, genders and even disabilities. The pictures would show that the classroom welcomes various individuals and would want them to feel welcomed.
2. List and provide a short annotation for at least 3 children’s books you would have in your classroom. Include an explanation of why each book is appropriate or important for broadening children’s perspectives and understandings of multiculturalism. The first book I would want to have in my classroom would be Yoko by Rosemary Wells. Yoko is a story about a cat who is struggling with some cultural differences at school. More and more there are more children entering preschool who do not speak English. It would be much easier to communicate with these children using their home language rather than using signs or pictures. If I were to use Karen for example, I believe those children from Nepal would feel more included in conversations. I would also like to communicate non -verbally in other languages, such as newsletters, calendars or fliers that go home to the children in my class. By translating the information from English to family’s home languages, it shows that I value their home
