As everyone are well aware, the children are the future of a country. The way they are raised impacts the type of citizens they will become. A country’s social policies play a big role in this process. Parental leave and the parental involvement it enables gives our society a chance at having some healthy and well-rounded citizens.

All industrialized countries except the United States have laws declaring paid parental leave a law. In fact out of 185, only 3 countries have no paid maternity, paternity, or sick leave law: United States, Oman, and Papua New Guinea. What the United States does have is the Family and Medical Leave Act, passed in 1993, guaranteeing an employee’s job when he or she needs time off work for personal sickness or to take care of another. It is unpaid and specifies that the employee:
• Works for a company with 50 or more employees
• Has worked for that employer for at least a year, and
• Has worked 1,250 hours (more than half-time) for that employer in the previous 12 months. (Wallace, n. pag.)
This paper explains the importance of a parental leave law and why it needs to be paid. It evaluates the benefits on employees, on the economy and on society of a paid parental leave law. Taking from previously published articles, it examines how the United States ranks against other industrialized countries when it comes to paid leave and how other countries finance such leaves. Then, it synthesizes from these standards a proposal for a reasonable paid parental leave provision for the
