Discrimination - “The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the ground of race, age, or sex.” Racial discrimination - “Treating someone unfavorably because he/she is of a certain race or because of personal characteristics associated with race (such as hair texture, skin color, or certain facial features).” Discrimination isn’t a newly faced issue in our society today. We have witnessed many events where racial discrimination has taken place all over the country. I chose to research this topic because it was a topic that came up during our Civil War presentations in Social Studies class. According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission it states, “It is unlawful to harass a person because of that person’s race or color. Harassment can include, for example, racial slurs, offensive or derogatory remarks about a person's race or color, or the display of racially-offensive symbols” (EOCC). This statement from the text explains how it is illegal to discriminate a person just because they are a certain race/color. There are different types of harassment, such as making racist remarks and displaying offensive symbols to a race. Whether it be a friend, a co-worker, a classmate, anyone can be a victim of racial discrimination and anyone could be the person who discriminates a person just because they are a certain race/color. According to the law, it is illegal to discriminate a person when it comes to any facet of employment such as hiring, pay, promotions, firing, benefits, etc.
Many people in our society have strong feelings about racial discrimination, so they have taken action in order to prevent this unjust issue that our world is faced
