The author Poe knew exactly how to convey that feeling of darkness across to his readers using many sensory details. Poe also knew precisely how to make the dialogue in this story also seem dark. Montresor may have been a crazy psychopath, but he sure knew how to play at people’s pride and emotions as shown by his frequent use of reverse psychology. It was not Montresor who led Fortunato to his doom it was Fortunato himself and his pride. The dialogue between the two characters conveys just that.
