Essay On The Trueman Show

Few years ago, my friend recommended me a movie, The Trueman Show. The film tells a story about a guy called Trueman, he was born in front of a live audience. Each move of him has been captured by thousands of cameras in the big studio. Christof, the director of this show, set up a perfect life for Trueman. After Truman knew he was living in a fake world, he decided to leave and pursue a true life that he really wants. This film changed the way I think about my life. At first, I did not understand why Trueman chose to leave a wonderful life that most people want to have. Then I realize there is no point to pretend living in a world if you cannot even be yourself. To be myself is the greatest inspiration this movie gave me. The Trueman Show uses an extreme way to remind us to think if we still have feelings in today’s world. Who am I,
why there’s no difference between today and yesterday, what do I really want? Maybe there is imperfect moment, maybe there is a period life is full of loss, but as the director said, “if he was absolutely determined to discover the truth, there's no way we could prevent him.” Truman had made a decision to pursue the truth of the world. After experiencing some terrible storms, he finally got to the end of the ocean, when his boat hit the wall he realized, the world is not what he expected. The director told him the world outside is even more unpredictable, people are also full of lies, in his world Trueman can be happy. Trueman still does not want to be the part of the show. If he did not drive away, sail the boat into the ocean, he would still be living in a safe, peaceful and simple life. At the same time, he would also be poor, lonely and blinded. Trueman, as an ordinary guy did the most unordinary challenge in his life. To me, Trueman made a good decision to make him become a real true man.
In some aspect Trueman and I share similar experiences.
I was growing up in a family that my parents arrange almost everything for me. My parents always tell me “I know it is good for you”. Sometimes I feel they were protecting me too much. I respect and love them but does not mean I should listen to them everything. When I was 16, I decided to study abroad in the US. It was a hard decision for my family. Under my insistence they finally agreed. Few years later I learned how to take care of myself. Imagine if I still stay with them, choose a university that close to home, study a business major cause they always want me to, and after graduate go to work that they arranged for me. It sounds good but that is not want I want. During these years my parents have changed the way they treat me as well, they will give me advices but let me to decide. Even though the distance between us is far, but our relationship is even closer. Study abroad is just a way to discovering myself and I never regret this decision. I think Trueman will also learn to adapt to the real society and find himself after he leave the studio that he is familiar
with.
Life is like a movie, but not a movie. We do not have a chance to rehearse our life. If you are not happy with the life you have right now, do not be afraid to step out from the comfort zone. In some way, all of us are “Truman”. We are all living in a world that watched by other people. Every person we met, everything we did are all set up by a director called “destiny”. The difference between Trueman and us is first 30 years of Truman’s life was controlled by others, but our life is on our own. We are the master of our destiny, so live the way you like, live the life you love.
