drug tests in order to receive the assistances welfare has to offer. In order to receive welfare benefits such, as food stamps, the individual should be a law-abiding citizen. Using money and resources given to them for illegal activities is unacceptable. If drug testing were a requirement, people who receive welfare and misuse it would most likely avoid taking from the system for fear of being caught. Requiring a drug test from each individual would, in turn, decrease the use of taxpayer’s money on the individual’s welfare. The money saved could go towards the elderly who really need the care and assistance. The decrease in money used for welfare could also be further used in other areas taxpayers pay for like education, public motorways, and the military.
Second, the U.S. continues to cater to able-bodied individuals who work the system. These people should be at work and not depending on the government to give them a handout. Individuals who continue to take advantage are the ones who should be tested. Once again, the money spent on these people could go towards people with true needs. They are physically capable of providing for themselves however they choose not to. Drug testing these people would push them to look for jobs, and if that person does use illegal drugs it could bring them to quit. More people involved in the work force would also positively impact the economy. This is something greatly needed in America. More citizens need to work for what they have and provide for their families. Welfare should be reserved for those who are physically unable to take care of themselves or do work but are unable to make the income needed.
Finally, the biggest issue of drug testing and welfare is that most working citizens are required to take random drug tests in order to continue with their job.
Many feel this is unfair to people who are honest and work for what they have. Someone who works and provides for their family is required to take a random drug test to work, but those who do not work and apply for government aid expect to be given money with no questions asked. It is simply unfair for someone who does not work to receive money and handouts for free and not have some sort of test. Drugs are illegal, therefore if someone wishes to receive benefits they should follow the law. The only fair reasoning for workers who help pay for welfare is to know their money is not going towards the purchase and distribution of illegal drugs. Many people on welfare become offended by this. They believe that they should be able to collect checks and not have to meet any requirements. If drugs were not a problem, they would not complain about being
tested.
In conclusion, welfare can be very helpful to Americans when used correctly and fairly. Welfare is a system meant to help those in need, not those who refuse to support themselves. Participating in a drug test in order to receive welfare benefits should not be a problem. Citizens who obey the law and truly need financial assistance will agree with being tested regularly. Drug testing all recipients would give taxpayers peace of mind and allow them to feel their money is helping someone who rightly needs it. Testing welfare beneficiaries could lower the use of drugs, increase the workforce, and serve as justice for those who pay for the government to assist others.
