Ethical Dilemmas Faced By Estevan And Esperanza
When Estevan and Esperanza pretended to be the parents for Turtle in order for Taylor to be able and adopt her. Sure,it wasn’t the most ethical approach, but it was the correct approach for all the excitement that Turtle expressed. With all the struggles Taylor has gone through and odd situations that she had encountered with Turtle and all of the great moments as well it was the perfect call in Taylor’s shoes. From the moment that Taylor was given the baby and saw all the marks of abuse on Turtle's body and how she figured she was sexually abused there had to have been a click in Taylor’s mind that said “you have to take care of this baby for the rest of your life”. When all of the questions are being asked at the doctor’s office if Taylor is the child’s parent or guardian, Taylor responds by saying, “I’m the one responsible for her”. (134) Taylor shows all the care in the world for this child and still doing all of this illegally, actions like that show how much Taylor wants the end goal for Turtle to be her child.

Estevan and Esperanza who had lost their child in past years must have understood what Taylor was feeling just given a child who was almost beaten to death and needed someone to take after because the two of them were parents at one point.
That helps them make the decision to pretend and illegally say that they are the parents of Turtle. They know that Taylor makes a great parent and Estevan even says, “‘We know she will make a good mother to this child’”.(226) When a couple who were once parents can say that about Taylor who never wanted to end up in this situation of having a baby and just being her, some can say she is doing a really great
job!
While Taylor and Turtle are headed home after all of the adoption papers are cleared Taylor tells Turtle that she is now her mother and Turtle who doesn’t say much just bobs her head looks out the window. Turtle starts singing her famous vegetable-soup song, but now there were people mixed in. Taylor who is the last person in the song realizes that “ I was the main ingredient”.(246) Turtle understands what is happening in this situation and is very happy about it because she knows that from the time her and Taylor have spent together, Taylor is going to be a great mother. Even though there were strings pulled illegally by having Estevan and Esperanza the “real” parents of Turtle, this was the correct move ethically for Taylor to be the new mother/guardian for Turtle. Some might say that Taylor hasn’t been a mother before, but all time she spent in the hospital caring for people and all the time that she has been with Turtle it only makes sense for this to happen.
