Public officials and employees have a code of ethics that governs their day-to-day job functions. These code of ethics may be established by their employer or other organizations in which they are associated with, such as the IAFF or fire chiefs association. Code of ethics are written to establish expectations and to ensure the workforce or members of an organization are held to the highest ethical and legal standards.
Arizona emergency service professionals do not have a written code of ethics that pertains to all emergency workers in the state. Each fire department and ambulance company has its own, unique code of ethics standards for their employees. The Arizona Fire District Association and the Arizona Fire Chiefs Association each has a code of ethics for respective members to follow.

Crews must be aware that their interactions with the customers are also vitally important and from the perspective of public perception. Ethics codes go beyond addressing conflicts of interest, and involve matters such as the acceptance of gifts, purchasing procedures, employment practices, and governmental decision making (Varone, 2012, p.614). IT is vital for public service employees to abide by the ethics codes to avoid breaking laws or damaging the public trust.
