Consumer ethnocentrism means ‘…the appropriateness, indeed morality of purchasing foreign made products.’ Today, when the Indian consumer has great access to foreign goods and the Indian manufacturer is facing increasing competition from foreign products, the neglect of this topic in India is hard to explain. The CETSCALE, a scale to measure consumer ethnocentrism, has been tested in many parts of the world but not in India. This research examined the psychometrics of the CETSCALE, the extent of consumer ethnocentrism in India, and the relationship of socio-demographic variables and quality consciousness with consumer ethnocentrism. Data were collected from three socio-demographic groups—materials management professionals, the group with the largest influence on organizational buying behaviour; university students, the most often researched group of respondents the world over and hence ideal for a cross-cultural comparison of results; and senior secondary school students, a group recommended as worth researching by a prominent earlier researcher. Analysis of data was done with the help of currently used and recommended tools including exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Results show that the concept of consumer ethnocentrism prevailing in India is not conceptually equivalent to the concept of consumer ethnocentrism prevailing in other countries where it has been found to be uni-dimensional. In India, the concept has more nuances. What is more, the concept as understood by the three different sociodemographic groups is also not identical. The level of consumer ethnocentrism in India is not

    THE EMIC VERSUS ETIC DILEMMA IN CROSS CULTURAL MARKETING RESEARCH: A PERSONAL CONSTRUCT THEORY PERSPECTIVE Richard E. Plank, Western Michigan University ABSTRACT Cross-cultural research in marketing, particularly involving the measurement of behaviors and attitudes using methodologies which require the respondent to respond to scale type questions, is difficult as well as time and resource intensive. A major issue is the so called emic versus etic dilemma which focuses on whether or not the measure is culture bound (EMIC) or can be used across all cultures (ETIC). This paper argues, based on personal construct theory, that behavioral type measures or scales must be examined within each cultural domain to determine if the construct and its measure is relevant in cultural context and provides a method to do it. INTRODUCTION Surprisingly, there has been little research on the topic of etic versus emic scales and the problem of cultural impact on meaning and scaling of constructs. (Herche, Swenson, and Verbeke 1996). Emic instruments, those which are culture bound, if used in inappropriate research venues result in research which is neither valid nor reliable in any sense. Since marketing scholars often use scaling methodologies, often using scales borrowed from other contexts, notably from psychological research, and since most of these scales have been developed in the U.S., it is important to determine if the scales are appropriate for use in other cultures. Obviously, in developing new constructs and measures of those constructs, the pursuit of etic concepts, if possible, allows for cross-cultural research. Yu, Keown, and Jacobs (1993) in reviewing attitude scaling for cross-cultural research cite six major methodological issues; functional equivalence, conceptual equivalence, instrument equivalence, sample selection, data collection methods, and data analysis. Hence, increasing the knowledge of customers about products makes research about factors that influence their decisions more worthwhile than before. The purpose of this paper is to review the country of origin literature and mention different variables that influence consumer purchase intention, and also highlight the relationship of variables and customer purchase intention based on the previous literature. This research is valuable for promoting the consumer behaviour literature and providing support for relationships between the variables and purchase intention. In addition, it also helps marketers who work on related topics according to the country of origin perspective. The existing literature shows that all of the variables mentioned in this paper have a relationship with customer purchase intention from the country of origin point of view. However, there are many factors for which it has not been determined whether they influence consumer purchase intention related to the country of origin issue and there is wide scope for future research and development.
