Their main goal was to control trade routes and force merchant vessels to call at fortified trading sites and pay duties. This made people from all places travel because the people were intrigued with the idea of trade and gaining new valuables. For example, Peter the Great was huge in the policy of Westernization which was basically the concept of taking western political traditions and using them yourself. In this case, Peter the Great was upset with his country and wanted it to be more like Western Europe. He decided to meet with skilled, intelligent workers from Western Europe such as engineers and scientists knowing that this would help him understand their political concepts better in order to replicate them. Before the Portuguese started imperializing, the Indian Ocean had been relatively peaceful but they brought a heavily armed Navy almost everywhere they went and started taking over places by rugged force. By 1570 the Spanish territory transitioned from one controlled by the conquistadors to one controlled by the Spanish crown. The two centers of administration that were established were New Spain (Mexico) and also New Castile (Peru). The Spanish colonies were controlled by a viceroy who is a ruler that expresses complete authority. This meant that there were less bureaucrats and this became difficult to administer due to difficulties in communication and transportation. The huge impact that Spain left that added to European Exploration is how the Spanish saw the Americas as a land to exploit and administer than to settle. They established plantations to grow cash crops which helped a lto in trade demands.
