In “HAPA” Kristen Lee can’t identify her heritage so she invents one that suits herself and covers all of what she is. “HAPA means half Asian and half another race” (Lee 53). Lee made the decision to make up what she is because of her heritage. It represents who she is and where she came from. Lee’s heritage affects her everyday life because people would always ask what she was and she couldn’t answer their question. Lee thinks that everyone has their own identity and that there are many ways to identify yourself out of the stereotypes. “My style is not as simple as those stereotypes” (Lee 54). Our views are altered by how we identify ourselves if we are different from other people we might not get their experiences or views. In “My Mother Pieced Quilts” the mother treats the act of quilting and the quilt itself as an art and holds it with great respect. “In the evening you sat at your canvas -our cracked linoleum floor the drawing board” (Acosta 73). This shows that to the mother the quilting was enjoyable and was a passion that she had. And that passion has passed on to her child who sits and watches her with great detail as she quilts. Her opinion on quilting will probably be different from someone who wasn’t raised in a family where quilting was a tradition.
